The Fossil Fuel Curse

Hey guys, my friends just started a kickstarter for a really cool project!! 

They’re writing a book about Jharia, India, and Fort McMurray, Canada. These cities are special because they are both sites of HUGE CRAZY fossil fuel mining. In Jharia, it’s coal, in Fort McMurray, it’s tar sands. 

Right now there’s a lot of global attention being paid to “sustainable” or “renewable” resources. This can be great for the environment and for health, etc etc, but it might be bad news bears for the communities that depend on fossil fuel extraction to pay the bills. 

I’m an environmental sciences student, and renewable energy is something I believe in, but it’s pretty easy to get lost in these big ideas and lose sight of people on the ground, so I’m super stoked to read this book about the stories of everyday people who are living this transition.
