Part1 Part11
Roman carries the sleeping side back home. This time, they end up back in the commons. He was still upset, but the hope Patton’s statement had given him was growing by the second. Logan had told them they shouldn’t get their hopes up, but Roman couldn’t help it. He could get his emo back! Even if he didn’t, telling Virgil about the memories he no longer had would help them...readjust.
He sat down on the couch, the anxious side in his lap. Roman smoothed back his bangs, hating waking him up, but being unable to resist. He shook Virgil into consciousness. Well, half-consciousness.
“Vigil? Can you hear me?”
Virgil rolls over, tucking is face into Roman’s chest, “Wha d’you wan, Princey. M’tired.”
The nickname sends a thrill through Roman. He trudged on. “Do you remember what you were doing before your nap?”
“Mmmm...I didn’t do it. It was probably Logan. G’night.” Patton squeals next to him, blaming Logan is a very old Virgil thing to do. Even Logan is looking shocked and optimistic. Remus and Janus stood near the hall quietly, both too overcome with hope and fear to speak.
Virgil finally sat up, he rubbed at his eyes. “What are we doing? You guys all seem anxious? Is this the memory thing? Look, I know I don’t remember anything about you guys, but...I wanna make new memories with you all, if you still want me to. I want to be the Virgil in your pictures! In your stories! The Virgil that bakes horribly with Patton, or makes fun of Roman, or does experiments with Logan, and sits up and watches horror movies with Remus and Jan. I wanna be the guy you guys know...”
Patton has tears streaming down his cheeks. “Virge, none of us told you some of those things. How do you know about them?”
Logan nods, a similarly choked up expression on his face. “Virgil, perhaps...you do remember...just not...immediately.”
Virgil thinks on that for only a moment, “Nut you heard Jealousy! That’s not possible.”
Patton runs forward and wraps Virgil in a hug, “You don’t have to do it all at once, kiddo. We’ll be here to help. We love you no matter what, and we will always want you around.”
Logan walks forward and wraps his own arms around the anxious side, “Patton is right, we will always care for you.”
Remus runs forward and encompasses the trio in a tight hug, “We love you, emo. And we can figure this out together!”
Janus follows suit, “You’re definitely not my child and important to me regardless of your amnesia.”
Virgil is crying when everyone pulls back and he’s left staring at Roman.
“I love you, Virgil. I—I know you don’t remember right now, but one day...I wanna see if you remember maybe loving me too...”
Virgil wraps the prince in a hug, “I may not remember much, but I do remember wanting to do this.” He pulls his head back from Roman’s chest and, standing on his toes, presses a slow, gentle kiss to Roman’s lips. Roman kisses him back quickly. When they break apart, Virgil is once again surrounded by the arms of the other four sides.
It’s not until everyone pulls apart that they notice the orange bracelet on the floor. The clasp broken.

Virgil has been in his room all day, everyone has memories of when that would be normal, but now...he should’ve come down to eat breakfast, or dinner at least.
Patton is the first to try to get him out, he knocks on the dark purple door. But...it’s not purple anymore. It’s solid black with an orange X marked over the entire shape. Something about the entire room feels off, like it isn’t Virgil’s room.
“Hey, kiddo? You need to come down and eat! It’s almost eight and you haven’t eaten anything today!” He calls through the wood. When he gets no answer and then can’t get the door open he starts to panic. “Roman! Logan! Come here! It’s an emergency!”
The pair are quick to ascend the stairs and stand right next to the father figure.
“What’s with Virgil’s door?” Roman ask bretahlessly.
“I don’t know! I can’t get him to come out! It’s locked.”
Logan quickly attempts to reassure Patton, “He May just be wearing his headphones. You know how he listens to his music at a high volume. He probably hasn’t heard you.”
“Yeah,” Roman says but worry is still present all over his face, “You just have to knock louder.”
“VIRGIL! ITS TIME TO COME OUT NOW!” Roman bangs on the door, failing to hide the panic in his voice.
They all go silent when there’s no answer. In the silence they hear ragged breathing on the other side of the door.
“I’m gonna break the door in.” Roman says, it’s not a question. Not a suggestion.
Patton only nods, “Be careful.”
Roman walks back a few feet and runs at the door. He bounces off of it and does it again, this time the door creaks. Two more goes at it has Roman’s shoulder sore and the door off it’s hinges.
The sight they were met with was terrifying. Virgil was curled up in the farthest corner from the door, his hood pulled up, but not enough to hide the endless flow of tears rolling down his cheeks as he shook in the corner, unable to catch his breath.
“Panic attack,” Logan mumbles.
Patton relaxes, he hates that Virgil is going through an attack, but this is something that he can help with.
“Hey, kiddo. It’s okay, can you do your breathing exercises with me?” He walks towards the anxious side.
Virgil screams, “NO!” It’s a short scream, he’s too short of breath for a long one.
Patton stops in his tracks, “Kiddo, hey, it’s okay. It’s just me, your favorite dad.” Patton tries for a comforting smile but Virgil starts crying harder.
“Please...” he takes in a ragged breath, “...don’t.”
Patton frowns, “Don’t what, Virgil?”
Virgil keeps shaking, “H-how...how do you...kn—know my-hy name?”
Patton’s eyes widen, “You told it to me...Years ago!”
When Patton’s voice rises in panic Virgil shoes away.
He shakes his head furiously, “I...I di-id n-ot.”
Patton sits down on the floor, still about three feet away from his dark strange son. “Yes, you did, honey.” His voice is so gentle, Virgil immediately feels like it’s a trap. “You don’t remember who I am?”
Virgil shakes his head fast, “p-plea-s-se do-on’t hurt me.”
Patton’s heart breaks, “you don’t remember me...but I could never hurt you, sweetheart.”
Roman clears his throat behind Patton, “Do you remember me, Vee?”
Virgil shies away, the red man is much louder than the glasses man. He merely shakes his head and stares at the silent man with the tie and the blank expression.
When he steps forward Virgil tenses up, “Do you know who I am, Virgil?” At Virgil’s head shake the sides face falls, “Do you remember hitting your head on something?”
Virgil shakes his head violently. “I didn.” He mumbles. His breathing more regular now because he’s been distracted, he’s still on edge though. Patton can see him eyeballing the doorway every few seconds.
Patton fights back the urge to wrap Virgil in a hug, “Will you come downstairs with us? Please? We promise you know us. We’re your family. We love you, we promise. We need to figure out what happened, okay? Can you come downstairs?”
Virgil looks at him with a panicky expression, “Are you gonna make me?”
Patton shakes his head, “If you don’t want to you don’t have to. We can stay here and talk.”
Virgil shakes his head, he wants them out of his room. He stands on shaky legs and jerks back when Patton offers him a supportive hand. They all four walk out in tense silence. Logan, Patton, and Roman overcome with worry. And as they walk to the living room, not a single one of them fails to notice the hoodie he’s wearing is the old one, and that he’s now sporting a bright orange bracelet.

Part1 Part2 Part4
On the way to Janus’s room, Patton tries to comfort Virgil. His anxiety seems to be getting worse with every step. He’s no longer speaking, and Patton is trying to make him remember him.
“Oh, and there was that time you and I broke the oven trying to make cookies, because we set it on the wrong setting and the cookies exploded.”
Virgil tilts his head, speaking his first words in the past ten minutes, “We’re not good at baking, are we?”
Patton laughs, “Sometimes we are.”
Virgil walks faster to walk next to Patton, “I didn’t hit my head.”
Patton nods, “I’m worried because I don’t think you did either. I need you to believe me when I say that we all love you, you mean so much to us. We’re gonna try to get your memory back.”
“How would I lose it?” Virgil asks suspiciously, “Maybe you guys are making all of this up.”
Patton shakes his head, “You saw the pictures, we—”
Roman cuts in, “Virgil, what would it take to convince you that you know us?”
He shrugs, “I don’t know...”
Roman sighs, “I—we—love you, we care about you, and right now I am asking for a little trust. But I swear on my sword you won’t regret trusting us. We’re not gonna hurt you.”
Virgil shrugs and gives him a skeptical look, “Maybe...”
Roman sighs, “One day we’ll laugh at this, Emo Nightmare.”
“What did you call me?” Virgil asks incredulously.
“It’s...um...it’s a nickname. It’s kind of our thing.” Roman says awkwardly.
“Hmph...sounds like you just made that up to insult me.”
“No! Well...I did at first, but...now, we’re friends.” Roman sighs again. “You’ll remember soon.”
“We’re here.” Logan declares from the front of the procession.
Patton knocks on the yellow door.
Janus swings it open, “To what do I owe the pleasure?” He asks drily.
“Something’s wrong with Virgil!” Patton immediately jumps into an explanation. Several minutes later Janus is staring at Virgil with concern.
“He doesn’t remember you at all?” He whispers softly.
Patton shakes his head sadly, “We we’re hoping you’d have some photos or stories...or that maybe he’d just remember you and Remus because you spent more time with him than we did...”
Janus nods and turns to Virgil, “Do you know who I am?”
Virgil shakes his head, “Some sort of lizard man?”
Janus frowns. “Snake,” he hisses.
“Whatever, why should I remember you?”
A look of pure hurt washes over Janus’s face, “Because I raised you...”
Virgil looks down uncomfortably, “I’m sorry, I don’t know who you are.”
Janus nods solemnly, then turns to Patton. “Come in, I have some stuff that may help.”
•••
Janus bends down and grabs a box from under his bed. Remus is snoring on his bed and no one seems to want to wake him up.
“Who’s the dead guy?” Virgil asks.
“That’s Remus, he grew up with you. You’re more likely to remember me as Deceit, but my name is Janus. Now, come look at these.”
Virgil hesitantly walks over to the bed where Janus sits. He looks at the items in his lap. Janus passes them to him one by one.
“This is a Christmas ornament you made when we were younger.” Virgil examines the pop sickle stick monstrosity covered in fake cobwebs and plastic spiders. Virgil makes a face. “And this is a picture of you and Remus after you fell in a pond in the imagination.” Virgil laughs at the picture of two soaking wet little kids. One of them unmistakably the man asleep behind him. Janus shows him several other things. None of which Virgil remembers.
“We lookin’ at pictures?” Remus asks as he sits up.
Virgil flinches and flings himself toward the door.
“Hey, Fight or Freak. What are you doin here?”
Janus puts his hand on Remus’s shoulder, he whispers something into his ear. Although all discretion is quickly abandoned when Remus sits up and yells.
“You don’t know who I am?! We lived together for ages! What do you mean you don’t remember?”
Virgil shrugs, “Maybe you guys know a different Virgil?”
Patton sighs, “No, kiddo. This is you. We know you. Why don’t you believe us?”
Virgil sighs, “Look, I’d love to be the guy in those photos. But I think I’d remember all of that! I think you guys maybe made some of that up. I know you can doctor those photos.” He points accusingly at Roman. “You’re creativity! You can do anything you want.”
Roman nods, “I could, but I didn’t. Vee...that’s you.”
Virgil groans, “Then, why don’t I remember?”
“Woah, wait.” Remus jumps up and grabs Virgil’s arm.
“Hey, let go!” Virgil tries to pull his arm out of Remus’s grip.
“Jan! Look at this!” He shows Virgil’s arm to the snake.
Janus’s eyes widen, “Oh god.”
It’s the only thing he can say at the sight. The only response to the orange band wrapped around the anxious trait’s wrist.

Part1 Part7 Part9
Virgils hands are fisted in Roman’s shirt. He’s sleeping soundly by the time they get just halfway back to Janus’s room. But, he won’t let go of Roman. Remus offered to take the emo from his brother twenty minutes ago, but even in sleep Virgil was stubborn. Roman told Remus to just leave Virgil with him, no use disturbing him. And, if he was being perfectly honest with himself, he liked having the, usually distant, trait curled up in his arms.
When they finally get to Janus’s room, the snake clears off the bed. Roman attempts to set Virgil down, but he’s still holding onto Roman. When Roman tries to remove Virgil’s hands from his clothing, he’s met with soft noises of discomfort.
Roman smiles, “Alright, my knight. I’ll stay, it’s alright.” He sits down on the bed, Virgil in his lap. He smooths back the anxious side’s hair and starts rubbing circles into his back.
“So,” Logan begins, “If fighting him didn’t work. What’s our next option?”
Janus frowns, “I don’t know what else we could do! We don’t have any leverage! He’s got the advantage! There’s nothing we have to offer him and he’s not playing by his own rules!”
Roman shushes Janus, “Too loud, Jekyll and Lied. You’ll wake him.” He goes back to rubbing Virgil’s back.
“Right,” Janus sighs, “it’s just...he’s not staying with us anymore, and now he doesn’t even know us. He’s...he’s my family, I just want him back.”
“Aaw!” Patton wraps his arms around the scales side, “It’ll be okay, Janus. I’m sure we’ll get his memories back somehow.”
Janus freezes before awkwardly patting Patton on the back, “Thank you, but we can’t get that bracelet off without hurting Virgil. Jealousy has to do it. If he won’t do it, then we dont have any other options.”
“What if we were to...you know,” Remus makes a violent gesture. “Wouldn’t he have to let Virgil go?”
Logan frowns, “I am typically apposed to that sort of violence, but perhaps we could capture Jealousy. I’m sure his freedom would be worth more to him than whatever Virgil’s amnesia gives him.”
Janus nods, “I suppose we don’t have a choice.”
“What does he want with Virgil anyway? You said it was an attack on Ro, why would this be an attack on Roman?” Patton asked rapidly.
Remus giggles, “Well, for starters Jealousy wants Thomas’s attention more than anything, and frankly he likes Roman’s spot as he’s Thomas’s special little hero.” Roman shoots him a dirty look. “And, uh, I’m sure you’ve all noticed Roman’s little...infatuation with our little emo here.”
Roman’s face turns red and he quickly checks to make sure that Virgil is still asleep. “Remus. Shut. Up.” He grits out.
Remus giggles again, “See what I mean.”
“Oh.” Patton says softly. “That’s why you two are Like That. I thought you guys had just become like...really great friends.”
Roman’s face is bright red, “Sorry, padre.”
Patton laughs, “No, it’s fine. I’m just shocked I never noticed.”
“The two of you are closer than him and I, now that I think about it, and you did take longer to accept him.” Logan ponders aloud.
“Yes! We get it! I’m obviously infatuated with the emo nightmare! Can we move on!” Roman cries indignantly.
“What are we talkin abou’,” Virgil starts to sit up in Roman’s arms.
Roman looks absolutely mortified, “N-Nothing! Sorry to wake you! You can go back to sleep now! Everything’s fine!” His voice comes out in a high pitched squeak.
“Mmm...” Virgil looks around the room, blinking tiredly. “What’s goin on? Did I miss anything?”
“Yes, we were just discussing ways we could potentially capture Jealousy and bargain his freedom for his removal of that bracelet.”logan says dismissively. “We were also getting to the subject of Jealousy’s motives in taking your memories.”
Roman starts making aggressive cut off signs with his hands behind Virgil.
“Oh,” Virgil mumbles, “Why do you guys think he did it?”
“Because RoRos in lo—”
“Because you and I are very good friends and he wants my spot at the table, so to speak. He hurt you to get to me.” Roman cuts Remus off, “I am terribly sorry, Virgil. I should have been a better protector.”
Virgil laughs, “Aren’t I supposed to be the protector?”
Roman frowns, “Well, yes. But...”
“And look at how good I am at it.” Virgil laughs bitterly.
“Jealousy could have overpowered any of us,” Janus says darkly. “He’s ruthless, there’s no need to beat yourself up over it.”
Virgil shrugs, but he doesn’t look convinced. “So what’s the plan?”
Logan gives a confident smirk, “I believe I’ve just come up with the perfect one.”

Part1 Part10 Part12
Virgil couldn’t figure out why Patton looked so scared. He followed the mustached creativity into the bushes. The fatherly side’s hand still held tightly in his own.
He moves back quickly when he sees the orange side tied to a chair. At least the chair looked very comfortable, but Virgil doubted that mattered much to Jealousy at the moment.
The jumpsuit clad side was covered in blood. His eye was already beginning to bruise, and it looked like he had a few teeth missing. He tried for a smirk when he saw Virgil.
“How’s my favorite little amnesiac?”
Roman is in front of Virgil in less than a second, Virgil didn’t even see where he’d come from.
“Don’t you dare talk to him,” the prince’s voice is a growl. Anxiety notices that he’s looking rather worse for wear himself. His outfit stained with dirt and blood, his lip was actually still bleeding.
“Roman? Are you okay?” Virgil didn’t know where the concern for the creative side had come from. Only that it was strong.
“I’m fine, stormcloud. But remind me to thank Remus for that later.”
The chaotic side gave Virgil a wink. Virgil smiles at him, thankful that someone had stepped in to help Roman.
“Now,” Logan’s hand is on the back of Jealousy’s chair, “In exchange for your freedom, remove whatever restraints you’ve put on Virgil’s memory.”
Jealousy cackles, “Bring him over here.”
Roman’s hand replaces Patton’s as Virgil is led to the incapacitated trait’s side. Virgil hesitantly sticks his arm out, the orange bracelet a striking contrast to his hoodie sleeve.
Jealousy smirks, “Can’t exactly do anything without my hands now can I?”
Roman snarls but undoes some of the rope around Jealousy to release one of his arms.
Remus gets into a fighting stance, an eager look on his face. Just waiting for a chance to take the side down again.
Jealousy’s smirk doesn’t leave his face as he places a hand on the bracelet. Suddenly, Virgil is on the ground howling in pain.
Roman’s on his knees next to him in an instant. “Virgil? Hey, stay with me. It’s okay. I’m sorry, Vee. Deep breaths, you’re gonna be okay.” This was obviously a worse shock than last time.
Remus is next to the trio now, “We told you to take it off! Do you really want to test me?”
Jealousy gives Remus a wink, “Maybe later, but,” he shrugs, “I can’t take it off. It’s permanent.”
Roman stands up, “Stop lying! We know you’re lying! We have—Janus?”
The lying side has tears in his eyes, “He’s not lying. He can’t take it off.
“What? No, that can’t be right. He has to...he has to take it off.” Roman says quietly.
Patton walks over to the prince, “Kiddo...”
“No! He has to take it off! He has to! It has to come off!” Roman feels the tears falling down his face but he doesn’t care.
“I’m sorry, I couldn’t...remember...” Virgil says in between breaths, he’s still on the ground.
Roman falls back to the ground next to him. “It’s not your fault. We can...figure something out. I’m sorry...I...I’ve failed you...”
Patton is next to the pair now, “You didn’t fail, Ro. It just...didn’t work out. You did your best, now all we can do is move forward.”
Roman’s still crying as he picks Virgil up, “I’m so sorry.”
Virgil reaches out and cups Roman’s cheek, “Dad is right, you did your best. Nothing left to do now...” he leans into Roman’s shoulder, exhaustion taking hold.
Patton sucks in a breath, “He called me dad...”
Roman sighs, “He always does, Pat.”
Patton shakes his head, “Did you tell him he did?”
Realization and hope overcome Roman’s face, “No...I didn’t tell him any of that...”
