GENERAL — 72/262 — The Three States of Man

Serving as a figurative description of the ideal medieval society, the theory was that God divided society into three groups: warriors, clerics and peasants. The warriors were supposed to defend society and included nobility, soldiers and executors of state power. The clergy cared for salvation and education, and those serving the church and educated scholars could also be included here. The last category comprised the greatest mass of society; the task of the peasants was to work and feed the whole society. A well-known Latin proverb says: Tu ora, tu protege, tu labora. (You pray, you protect, you work). Though the division into classes is determinant and limits the freedom of social mobility, at the same time it guarantees social harmony. Everyone knows their place, what is expected of them and what plans God has for them. It wasn’t until the 15th century that some church reformers began to dismantle this teaching. For example, Petr Chelčický (a follower of John Hus) came up with the bold thesis that all people are equal.

— Medieval society relied heavily on a relative stability of the three estates to fulfil all their assigned tasks. At the same time, it was just this stability that frequently called for social mobility, namely wherever preservation of a class could not be ensured by natural reproduction, or when too much reproduction in one class led to an imbalance of the estates. For a large part of the Middle Ages, the latter was the case for the nobility, whose wealth allowed for them to procreate in much larger numbers than lower classes would – often so that there would be too many children to inherit their parents' titles. This surplus would lead to a constant pressure for downward movement, and many children ended up as impoverished nobles or in serfdom, as mercenaries, beggars or bandits, or they would fill the gaps of the estate of the clerics, who could not reproduce themselves. At other times, social circumstances would inspire upward movement. In the early Middle Ages, classes were not established as tightly yet, and there were good chances for servants of noblemen to climb up the social ladder if they proved worthy. This development is still visible in language – both the word 'knight' (compare to modern German 'Knecht') and 'vassal' (Latin 'vassus') originally meant 'servant', but with the large number of servants rising up socially, so did the meaning of the words ascribed to them. In later medieval times, cities gained more importance as places of trade, while their reproduction rate declined drastically. The resulting gaps would be filled by people from the countryside, mainly in professions that were based on skill, rather than capital, such as artisans, notaries or government servants. Many of them would stay in the labouring estate, but some would use their new-found proximity to the aristocratic circles to breach the established order.

The Trinity of KCDII in Missions:

Laboratores: Main Story Mission - the prelude to the Divorce, Henry tries unsuccessfully to defend his lordship (also to get him to help in the tasks) and get them back on track to Trosky. This mission gets an introduction on the hierarchy from Hans, who pointedly avoids manual labour as it does not befit his station.

Oratores: Main Story- The heist of the Italian Court is conceived, Henry learns some Italian (la tua bellezza mi abbaglia) and Godwin poses as the Cardinal for the bit after an unfortunate horseriding accident.

Bellatores: Side Mission- some Moravian nobles lost their dad's bones to a horde of Cumans, I dunno.
