World’s first recovered orbital rocket raised for display.
The Orbcomm OG2 Mission 2 first stage, also known as F9-021, was raised to vertical yesterday, August 20, at SpaceX’s Hawthorne, California, headquarters. F9-021 was the first rocket the company safely recovered following a mission, landing autonomously at LZ-1 December 21, 2015. SpaceX will be displaying the stage in landed configuration, stretching more than 156 feet into the California sky. The booster was located in LC-39A’s HIF until mid-June, when it was transported to Hawthorne. Since then, workers have been prepping the rocket’s display stand, including the pouring of a concrete base and installation of ground supports. P/c: Matthew Singer, Gene Blevins

Orbcomm booster arrives at SpaceX HQ ahead of display.
Making a first-ever second road trip across the country, the Falcon 9 booster from December’s Orbcomm 2 mission arrived back at SpaceX Headquarters in Hawthorne, California earlier this week.
The booster will be displayed vertically outside the building as a monument to the company’s achievements. Covered in a protective plastic wrap or the overland journey, the booster was uncovered yesterday outside the massive facility.
Since the stage will go on display, the original nine Merlin-1D engines had to be removed. International Trafficking in Arms Regulations determine that active-duty engines can not be publicly displayed, since they contain technologically sensitive information.Therefore, nine mock-up engines were installed before the booster left Florida.
Technicians also cleaned up the booster’s airframe, as evidenced by pictures of the stage in the HIF at LC-39A, where it has been since late December. However, the lower portion of the stage near the engines remains charred to show its fiery reentry.

Located at Kennedy Space Center’s LC-39A, the two recovered Falcon 9 first stages are being kept in the Horizontal Integration Facility. Here, the Orbcomm OG2 stage has been undergoing inspection and disassembly of its engines. The CRS-8 stage will undergo initial inspection here before being prepared for a series of static fires at the renovated pad in the upcoming months.
In the foreground is the Falcon 9 first stage from the CRS-8 mission, which performed the first-ever successful sea landing on the Autonomous Spaceport Drone Ship.
In the background is the first stage from the Orbcomm OG-2 mission, which marked the first time in history an orbital-class rocket was recovered following its flight, landing back at Cape Canaveral at LZ-1.
