A new anime project for Katsuhiro Otomo's "Akira" series by studio Sunrise has been announced. The premise is to incorporate the entirety of the original manga story.

In addition, Katsuhiro Otomo's new anime featured film is titled "Orbital Era."

-Synopsis-

“The plot takes place in the near-future on a space colony under construction. It is an action-adventure story following the lives of some young boys surviving in this peculiar environment and society as they are tossed around by fate. “The reality found in mankind's future” will be depicted through their perspective.”

Manga creator and anime director Katsuhiro Otomo (Akira and Steamboy) announced at his Anime Expo panel that he is making the film Orbital Era with Sunrise. The director said that the space science-fiction story follows the coming of age of youths on a space colony over the course of four seasons of the year.

Katsuhiro Otomo Announces New Projects, Including “Akira” Series

Katsuhiro Otomo announced his latest projects, an Akira anime, a new feature length animated film, and a “Complete Works” project, at the Anime Expo in Los Angeles.

The Akira anime will be adapting the manga, with the hope of adapting the entirety of the story. Sunrise Inc. is producing. The Akira film is also getting an HD remaster.

Otomo’s third feature film will be Orbital Era, which is set on “a space colony under construction” and will follow “some boys in this particular environment and society who keep living their lives while they’re being tossed about by fate.” Sunrise Inc. is also producing Orbital Era.

Otomo is partnering with Kodansha to release a Complete Works Project, which will release all of the author’s published work since 1971.

Have you heard that there making a full anime series of Akira that follows the rest of the manga before? Personally am real hype about it and can't to see some kind of animated teaser cause finally we'll have more Akira content, also Katsuhiro Otomo (who did work on AKIRA & Steamboy) has a third new movie called Orbital Era which am also excited to learn more on someday soon, it has a teaser trailer which gives just a little bit of taste of how cool this could be.

It’s actually pretty damn insane that they’re doing that. Never did I think we’d be in a timeline where Akira of all things would actually get a series that’s going to tell more of the story. That’s actually pretty cool and once again that’s another thing that’s happening before the Akira live action movie gets off the ground.

Also, just the image alone sets up a tone for Orbital Era.
