Amaya, a killer whale at SeaWorld San Diego, passed away yesterday (August 19th) at only 6 years old. Her cause of death is unknown, and she seems to have rapidly deteriorated after showing signs of illness on the 18th. Park guests reported that all shows for the day were canceled at 12pm, but the news of her death didn’t release until later that afternoon. A necropsy has been presumably performed but we likely won’t know more for a while as tests still need to be done. She was the youngest whale at the park. Amaya has never shown any prior indication of health issues or illness and her death seemingly came out of nowhere. She leaves behind her mother, Kalia, uncles Makani and Nakai, and surrogate family members Orkid and Corky. There is thankfully no evidence that any other whales are sick at this time.
