The ferry schedule dictated an early start, but that meant traffic was fine heading north. And walking on with the bike, there’s no need for a reservation. I was on the 7:25 boat, in the fog, but fairly confident it would burn off as the morning progressed, which it did.

I started riding up the hill from the ferry landing around 8:30. Crow Valley and Enchanted Forest Roads got me to Eastsound with few cars, where I considered stopping for coffee, but was starting to think that maybe I hadn’t allowed enough time to make it up Mount Constitution, find lunch, and still get back to the ferry for the 2:20 sailing.
From Eastsound the road climbs 450’ to Cascade Lake in Moran State Park and then it’s another winding 2000’ to the summit of Mount Constitution. Compared to my visit with Michele last November (Orcas Island), the summit was crowded and warm.
From the turnoff it’s less than five miles to the top, but it’s a lot of work. The steepest section is the middle portion where it consistently pushes 9-10%. Here’s a link to a more detailed description of the climb (PJAMM):

Cars on the ride up weren’t a problem. The pavement varies from perfectly okay to very nice, but tight corners coming down and occasional cars coming up means you need to stay close to the brakes.
I was back in Eastsound for lunch and coffee (Enzo’s). By then, I was pretty confident I would still make the afternoon boat. I avoided most of the busier main route by taking Dolphin Bay Road. Which was much more interesting and had almost no cars (but from which you could see neither the bay nor the dolphins). It had a mile or so of gravel and some steep hills. My legs were completely toast from the Mt. Constitution climb and I ended up walking one short steep stretch (my trip data suggests it was 24%, though I find that hard to believe).
I was at the ferry landing by 2:00, which gave me time for a cold drink and ice cream. The worst part of the day was the drive back, which was heavy traffic the whole way. In hindsight, I might have aimed for the late afternoon ferry, giving me more time to linger on the island and would have avoided the worst of the traffic.
