Welcome to the Order of the Phoenix → Solo [Appearances by Albus Dumbledore and Alastor Moody]
James was pretty sure he hadn't slept the night before. The anticipation, fear, expectation of it all was going to kill him. This was something that had been building for two years and he had been an unofficial part of it for nearly a year. He understood what Dumbledore had been trying to do now, when he had made him head boy. Giving James any sort of responsibility in the mindset that he had been in before, would have been a disaster. James was not naive enough to think that he was in charge of this. He was merely someone who had agreed to give his time and whatever resources he had to provide assistance. To be honest, the promotion that he had received, had never been something he expected.
But all the same, he was trying to embrace it. He was trying to take a stand and do what he could to help. He knew that's what everyone else wanted to do. They wanted to help too and the people that he had grown up with, he would now fight with. He knew what Dumbledore and Alastor Moody had planned and knew all of their lives were going to drastically change and fast. He just hoped Dumbledore wasn't right about the fact that something was coming. He had no clue how Dumbledore knew things but he did and that was that.
As he had been told to do, a portkey was used and then before he knew it, there were people arriving. He had stayed behind so that Dumbledore could give him some last minute instructions and had finished up the guidelines that Dumbledore had dictated to him. He had been surprised that everyone had been available to come in when needed, but this was it. He leaned against the table in front of the big meeting room that people were being brought into and this was it. His eyes drifted to people he had known his own life, people he had grown up, most of which were his friends. But Dumbledore and Moody had both told him that wasn't their role in this room. This room was for discussing things that could lead to living or dying. For the first time, he hadn't been affected by even Lily entering the room.
A part of him was hoping that he wouldn't have to do the talking because as brave as he tried to be, he didn't want to give the impression that he was trying to take over anything. Just because he had more power than the people who had never been in this room before didn't mean that he didn't have the same level of respect for Albus Dumbledore or even Alastor Moody. He then watched Dumbledore take a stand to the front of the room, as he commanded everyone's attention. It had always blown him away that Dumbledore could command an entire room's attention without raising his voice.
He then instructed James to hand out parchments of guidelines and James did so. He knew that they were just basic rules, like it was okay to socialize between a meeting, no sex in the building, always be ready to be tested for polyjuice, no fighting, no pranks, things like that. James had rolled his eyes when he saw the no pranks rule. He and Sirius could behave when they needed to behave. James then leaned more against the wall when Dumbledore spoke again.
"I do apologize that it has taken time to get everything organized but we wanted to make sure that everything was ready for us to do this right. Dark times are coming, as many of you know. We've all seen the evidence of that for the last few years, but it will continue to get worse. If any of you aren't prepared to do what you have to, then the door is that way. But if you are, you will tell no one that you come here or where this location is. With the exception of the few that are still students, you no longer have the trace on you that you had before you were of age. Lord Voldemort and his army are growing by day and he will not hesitate until everything in his path that he disapproves of is gone. I, along with James here, has spoken to everyone of you this past few months. I cannot assure you or give you a structured plan of what all this will be. Training is key in this situation. The resources available to us were going to be limited but that is no longer the issue. This place is a training facility, cloaked in the most complex magic. It is undiscoverable to anyone who has not been cleared. You will be trained in things like occlumency and learn lessons about fighting that wasn't taught at Hogwarts, you will go out on missions that will often have you paired up with people who you do not always speak with, and you will fight. You will get hurt, possibly even gravely. But we do appreciate the role that you all have agreed to take on, and hopefully this resistance will help us create one strong enough to take control of this situation. I do believe that has covered it. For these next few days, I want you all to as you begin training for this, be watching. Lord Voldemort thinks his people stay hidden but they do not. Never approach them. James, hand out the pictures if you will and explain.
James moved to hand out the pictures and drawing and then finally did speak. "Many of us dealt with people that we suspected to be on that side of this while we were in school. Hogwarts was different. From in there, they were just hexing, cursing, and such in the corridors. Out here, they were cloaks and masks as shown in the picture in front of you. You see one of these, do not automatically jump to fighting in a duel. Dumbledore didn't say this but I'm going to and this is something I struggle with too. Don't make stupid decisions. Don't think you can be out there playing hero. All of you have families, friends, and it's not worth not going home to them to play hero. I know I plan on spending as many nights as I possibly can with my wife, so think smart. It's better if they don't see you unless you have been specifically told to go out there and neutralize something they are doing. According to Dumbledore and Moody, we're going to mainly be checking to see if there's any suspicious activity this week. We don't officially know who the known death eaters as they call themselves are. I mean, many of us have suspicions but they are highly dangerous and unless told otherwise or if they're coming at you, don't try to be a hero."
James then went back to his place against the wall, and glanced down at the parchment when Dumbledore took the floor again to speak.
"Thank you, James. That was well said. Alastor doesn't seem to have anything to add but what I ask of you all as you begin training is be watching this week. Watch for anything suspicious. I do believe that it is only a matter of time before Lord Voldemort executes something and we need to know if there's any indications of anything happening anytime soon. We need to be ready for it, so be watching and remember, discretion is the number one part of this. While he suspects we are doing something, he doesn't know what and let's keep it that way.
James head then turned when he watched Alastor Moody step forward. "They covered it but welcome to the Order of the Phoenix. Look at the person next to you. They may save your arse at some point or die with you." He then stepped back.
James then glanced around the room, realizing this was it. There was no turning back now.
