Twelfth Sunday of Ordinary Time—Year B
(From: Ordinary Grace: Daily Gospel Reflections)
Lectio Mark 4:35–41
Meditatio “Why are you terrified?”
In times of crisis and suffering, has it ever seemed that Jesus is “asleep” in the boat of your life? Have you ever felt like screaming, “Jesus, don’t you care?” as you sit watching a loved one die, or fumble for words to comfort a friend with a terminal illness, or struggle to push back a wave of panic after having been laid off from a job? If you have, then you know just how the disciples in today’s Gospel passage feel—alone and helpless. Although it seems that Jesus has abandoned them, this isn’t the case at all. He is right there with them in the midst of their terrifying experience. The same is true for us. Jesus is right beside us in every pain, in every suffering, although we may rarely feel his presence. Precisely because he’s with us, he asks, “Why are you terrified?” Jesus wants our faith and trust! Even though it can be impossible to see while we’re in the thick of a crisis, Jesus works through every time of suffering to bring about something wonderfully holy and good in our lives. It may be that he’s strengthening us, purifying us, or increasing our desire for deeper union with him. However he works, Jesus is gradually transforming us through daily events into the persons he’s created us to be. Jesus is Love, and his motive for allowing all that happens to us in life is love. We can trust that everything is only and always for our good. At any moment, Jesus can command, “Quiet! Be still!” and the “storms” we’re living through will cease just as surely as they did that day on the gale-tossed sea. Let’s pray today for an increase of this faith. It can make all the difference in our lives.
Oratio Jesus, you want me to be honest with you when I pray. I know you don’t mind hearing my heart shout, “Don’t you care?” Show me—in every difficult circumstance—that you do. Give me the faith and trust to believe that even when you seem to be asleep in my boat, just the opposite is true. I wait for you to calm my fears.
Contemplatio Stay with me, Lord!
