In outdoor education there is a concept called metaphoric transfer; where, for example a student learns to overcome fear while summiting a mountain, and so is able to apply that ability in fearful "mountain like" situations in daily life. If I've metaphorically transferred anything from kayaking it's that when you get flipped over, roll back up and paddle like hell.
