Um sorry I couldn’t protect you…
Ever since Logan laid his eyes on his little sister’s egg he promised to protect her. Even at the age of five he just knew she’d need him. When Zairian hatched he’d always be by her side day and night. From flight practice to mana training he was there.
Zairian would follow Logan like she was his shadow. They couldn’t have been closer. But things weren’t always smooth…
When Logan was 15 and Zairian 10… Logan heard a commotion he’d heard before, Astell and their mother fighting. Must’ve been about the recent coronation for Zairian. Speaking of Zairian Logan spotted her huddled up next to the dining room entrance. Her fur was puffed up making her look like a black puff ball.
It would’ve been comical if the situation weren’t so tense…and those big turquoise eyes were watery. Logan knelt down and pulled his little sister into his wings. The two stayed like that for a moment before Zairian spoke, the question making Logan’s heart sink.
“Momma and Stella fight about me..?” That little voice spoke with eerie clarity, and Logan wasn’t sure how to respond.
“No…no Ziri…it’s not about you specifically.” he tried to reassure but Zairian’s next question only made it more complicated.
“Stella angry at me…why she always angry at me..?” By the moon this was gonna be difficult…
“S-Stella…Stella is just mad because she wasn’t chosen to be the next Queen. Mom and dad both believe she just isn’t fit for the role. You understand Ziri?” Logan tried his best to explain in a way he felt Zairian would understand. The little dragoness nodded slowly.
“So it’s not me..?” She asked with a tilt of her head. Those big turquoise eyes always looked like they stared directly into one’s soul.
“No little sis, it’s not you it’s her.”
After that night Logan felt he got a better understanding of his little sister than he did before. Which made him feel even more confident in his abilities to protect her. After all as long as they had each other they could get through anything. Right?
As Logan looked out at the burning village, the burning castle, and the screams of his citizens, he felt as if his entire life and his purpose in life was completely up in literal flames. There was no sign of Zairian or their father. He couldn’t protect her…he wasn’t there when it mattered most.
The young man fell to his knees as he stared into the destruction his amber eyes filling with fresh tears he whispered something that would be drowned out by the screams.
“I’m sorry I couldn’t protect you…”
