Oreyeon Unleash “Pazuzu” in New Music Video
~Doomed & Stoned Debuts~
By Billy Goate
While it may seem tongue-in-cheek or even kitschy to talk about demons and devils in our metal songs today, the new single from OREYEON conjures sentiments that once led my parents to ban heavy music from the household when I was 10. And that was for a freakin' Scorpions song, which could only be guilty of being too sexy. Yes, I grew up during the Satanic Panic of the 1980s.
Of course, a lot of the superstition has lifted in America around "the Devil's music," but there remains one property that still inspires urban legends: 1973's The Exorcist. It kicked off one of the widest reaching public protest campaigns from Catholic and Protestant acolytes in modern history. The film came out a few years before I was born, and naturally no one in my family has ever seen it -- possibly out of some subtle lingering fear for its starring demon: Pazuzu.
What's always been fascinating about Pazuzu to me is just how ancient he is, originating among the Assyrians and Babylonians. The mythical personification of the West Wind, in fact. While not mentioned by name in the Christian scriptures, the Aposle Paul speaks of "the prince of the power of the air" in reference to The Devil. So it seems before Satan was ever pictured as a whimsical, sardonic satyr, his identity had changed from God's right hand man (Job's prosecutor) to Pazuzu, the wind demon, and then centuries later into a bitchin' doom song by an Italian stoner metal crew.
Today, Doomed & Stoned brings you the second single and new music video off the forthcoming full-length record, 'Equations For The Useless' (2022) -- out June 17th on Heavy Psych Sounds (pre-order here). The song warns of waking Pazuzu from his ancient sleep whilst fiddling around with the ouija board, and is appropriately dark, murky, and churning in atmosphere. Pair this on a playlist with "Head Creeps" by Alice in Chains, "Corpse Candles" by Castle, Windhand's "Heap Wolves," and any song from High on Fire's Blessed Black Wings.
Give ear...

SOME BUZZ
Formed in 2014 by members of such as Woodwall, Mexican Mud or Army of Angry Youth, Oreyeon made a first impressing impact on the heavy rock scene with their debut 'Builders of Cosmos' released back in 2016.
The band's inspirations come from various kinds of the heavy music genre, but especially they find their roots in the glories of Black Sabbath, melting with hints of metal and mixing the classic stoner rock such as acts like Texas' stoner heavyweights The Sword.
Monolithic guitars, huge bass frequencies, melodic and complex vocals, Oreyeon know how to please every classic and stoner rock mind!
OREYEON - Equations For The Useless by HEAVY PSYCH SOUNDS Records
On their second album and the debut on Heavy Psych Sounds, Oreyeon try to move away from the usual stoner rock clichès into a more elaborate and melodic style. The vocal structures and harmonizations are definitely more complex, rich with melodies while the music tends towards a heavier path, taking cues from different kinds of genres and band references.
'Equation For The Useless' (2021) is Oreyeon's third album. The recordings took place in Bologna in late summer 2020 after several months of inactivity during the pandemic. It was recorded live, it shows the band's psychedelic/progressive side yet it has the classic kick ass doom stoner tracks. The lyrics are about depression and its relation with life. The band will be touring Italy and Europe during Summer/Fall 2022 to promote this new release.
