...do i. want to know what's up with toby? (is it the translation thing or is there a lot worse stuff)
Well the translation thing is pretty bad yea.
But Toby Fox is actively collaborating with Andrew Hussie, the creator of Homestuck, a webcomic that is just drowning in bigotry.
Toby Fox generally gives me the impression of a weeaboo. Despite collaborating with Temmie (a white-Japanese woman) for his major works, Toby Fox’s obsession with Japanese culture is too intense to be ignored…and it does lower the quality of his games. He can’t help but make the same jokes over and over about being obsessed with anime, kawaii culture, and having characters speak with weird inflections or dialects to indicate some level of immaturity that you could only find in your typical shoujo.
Some people argue it’s satire but it’s gone on for too long to even be classified as such anymore. One character or two sure, but now it’s a sizeable number and it just seems to be a part of the worldbuilding. We’ve lost the part where you pay genuine respect and homage to the culture, there is no authenticity.
This isn’t just a Toby Fox issue though. A lot of these older white millennial creators borrow their humor and concepts from directly orientalist rhetoric. I don’t like any of them for that reason, because the whole situation is just incredibly annoying, and this media ends up being painfully mediocre.
