5. A time period I dislike or find boring

most of american history tbh - not because i have anything against it in principle but two of my best friends study it and it’s literally all they talk about and one time we were all going to the movies and it turned out that the one we were going to see wasn’t showing and the cinema was also showing lincoln and hansel and gretel: witch hunters and guess who got to see jeremy renner and gemma arterton hunting down some evildoers with a semi-automatic crossbow??? NOT FUCKING ME THAT’S FOR SURE 

9. Favorite history-based movie

ok if we’re strictly on movies then it’s going to be a knight’s tale, the greatest story ever told, and pride, the only film i have ever cried during. and also shakespeare in love (it’s fucking historical fight me)

HOWEVER if we broaden this out to tv then it’s always and forever 100% going to be hbo rome, my beautiful short-lived gratuitous-nudity mayfly show, gone too soon, r.i.p you live on in our hearts. closely followed by spartacus, which includes everything i liked about 300 but leaves out everything i hate about 300, and peaky blinders

13. What historical places do you want to visit?

greece. anywhere in greece. or like around greece or in the general vicinity of greece. or italy. that would be nice. i hear there’s some neat stuff there. or so i have been told

So a while ago I read this book called A Devil to Play and it was all about this guy’s journey to relearn how to play the french horn. There were these chapters in there on french horn history that were really really interesting, and I just kinda went from there. Because I’m just typing this off the top of my head, I would recommend reading the book if you actually want more concrete history stuff.

The first iterations of the horn were literally called corn and were used in battle and hunting for communication. It was a while before they started to be used in orchestras and people started to write music for them. So the thing about the french horn is that it’s really hard to tune. Like really really hard, even with a double horn that has a trigger and lots of slides that can be adjusted. You have to tune both sides of the horn, and then you have to tune both of the sides with the rest of the instruments in the orchestra. Overall, it’s a big pain. 

So imagine you’re sitting there, in the middle of the orchestra where everyone is staring at you because some hotshot composer has decided that this new horn is going to be the big new thing. You’re holding not a double, but a single horn, with which most of the notes are produced by hand position in the bell, which effectively lengthens or shortens the horn. This means that you can only tune a certain number of notes, and then your hand has to be super fucking precise in the bell in order to get the notes in between the ones built into the horn. So yeah, you’re sitting in the middle of the orchestra with the music that has been written to specifically feature you, for the very first time in history, and you take a deep breath and get ready… and it’s flat. The note is flat, and everyone in the orchestra is staring at you.

It took a while for horns to really get a hold in orchestras because of this, and every time a new piece was written specifically for the horn, everyone would roll their eyes and think there was no way it was going to catch on. But it did. So yeah, the horn was basically the worst enemy of the hipster. 

Still my favorite quote from A Devil to Play is “In the right hands, the french horn is the most beautiful instrument in the world; in the wrong hands, it’s still better than the trumpet.”
