I Thought the Backgrounds Would Be Easy…
I’m translating posts from my old blog into English and publishing them on Tumblr.
I finished my latest animation.
My plan was to make things easier by setting the entire story in an open grass field, but it still ended up taking a lot of work. There were simply too many drawings. Still, I’ll tell myself I took the easy route. The production took a little over a month, which is shorter than the roughly two months my previous project required.
I record all of the dialogue in GarageBand on my iPad without using an external microphone. I hold the iPad in one hand, hide inside my closet, and shout my lines until I’m sweating.
For voice processing, I’ve been using GarageBand’s Vocal Transformer ever since I started. However, because my acting range is limited, changing the pitch alone doesn’t give me enough variety in character voices. Going forward, I’d like to learn more advanced voice changer software so I can create a much wider range of voices.
I’d also like to make 3D human reference models of Haran and Gabu in Blender soon. I actually made Carol’s model in Cinema 4D about three years ago, and it’s been incredibly helpful for drawing that oversized hat from every possible angle. I’m grateful to my past self for making it. Even when I use 3D models as references, though, I never trace them directly. The results tend to look unnatural.
There’s also an AviUtl script that adds a posterization effect, and I’ve been thinking about trying it. By reducing the number of color levels, I might be able to recreate the visual style of my older illustrations in my animations to some extent. Apparently Adobe Premiere Pro can do this as well, but it’s expensive, and I’m already using Final Cut Pro, so I don’t really need it.
