Born: 1693
Anna Ioannova was the daughter of the mentally handicapped Ivan V and Praskovia Saltykova and the younger sister of Tsarevna Catherine Ivanovna. She was nicknamed “Ivan the Terrible” for her great meanness.
Anna was known as the “national matchmaker” for her love of arranging marriages and holding weddings. Her most famous wedding was conducted in an ice castle built off the frozen Neva River. The married couple, Anna’s own jester and an elderly woman, nearly died from the cold on their wedding night. Jovially, the tzarina brought in a parade of exotic entertainment from Serbia, including bears, dwarves, and people of other deformities. Following her own wedding to Frederick William of Courland (arranged by her grandfather, Peter the Great), two dwarves jumped out of a cream pie and conducted a mock ceremony of the tzar and tzarina’s.
She often brought jesters and comedians into her court from Italy and Germany to keep herself entertained. In addition to their performance duties, these men were also expected to play big-bet card games with the tzarina. Fortunately for them, she often lost huge sums of money. One juggler, Pedrillo, was able use his card winnings to pay his way back home to Naples.
Anna also had an affinity for hunting. She had a wide range of wild animals (mostly birds but also larger game) released into Peterhof Park in St. Petersburg so she could shoot from the palace windows.
In the 1730s, she commissioned Mikhail Motorins to re-build the Great Uspensky Bell, also known as the Tzar Bell, in bronze. Both the previous Tzar Bells were destroyed in fires in the 1600s. The serious of Tzar Bells were the largest bells in the world, the third weighing 202 metric tons (445,000 pounds). The third Tzar Bell is on display in Moscow today but is missing a 10.4 metric ton chip. Because of its weight, this chip has not been removed but it laying on the ground beside the bell.
Autocratic and pot-stirrer for gossip and rumors, Anna was quoted saying, ““I am free to favor whosoever I want!”
