The Original Cake is as soft as you imagined it. It’s less eggy than the one from Ah Mah Homemade Cake (阿嬷老字號) but mum love it nonetheless. As for the queuing experience, once is good enough for me as this old man simply cannot take long hours of standing and I am still as clueless as to why people like queuing so much.
3.45pm and I was again back there, there were still quite a whole lots of people in line but at least for me they let me join the queue in the front since I had the number 12. As the baker took the cake out of the oven, one can see the top of the cake wobbling; yes, it’s that soft. First, he had to get it out of the tin by Flipping the Cake over his head then removing the tin. One more flipping to right side up the cake before measuring and portioning the cake.

If there is any new product on the market, you can bet that Singaporean will be out in droves to queue for it. I have never fathom out the reason(s) behind it so I thought I did join them once for the sake of fun. Fifteen minutes to ten in the morning as I made my way to the shopping centre and was directed to join the queue outside. Got the number 1-10 and was presently surprised that I was Number 10 in the line. My next door neighbour joined the queue behind me.
So, just what was I queuing for, you may ask. This is what I am queuing up for – free Original Castella Cake. For their official opening of their third branch in Singapore, Original Cake (源味本鋪) is giving away 500 Original Cakes to the first 500 shoppers who join the queue.
At 10:30am, the queue started moving and the first 10 including me was led to the basement floor, not to collect the cake but to join another 200 plus minus people in the queue!!! The layout in the basement is such that the food stalls are concentrated in the centre with shops at the perimeter. The Snaking Queue is so long that it formed a U-shape line with breaks in certain sections so as not to obstruct the flow of people going in and out of the other shops and the NTUC supermarket.
After an hour in the line, our backs were starting to ache as we reached the entrance to NTUC supermarket and the salesperson was promoting Nescafé beverages. Took the opportunity to grab a cup of free sample hot coffee with no intention of buying it. Asked my neighbour to “chope” (reserve) my place as I went to recce the shop. Got people actually came here to Queue at 7:30am; I was still in bed then!!!
Two and the half hours came and go, both My legs and back are killing me as my position in the queue is now in front of the NTUC cashiers. Had to take a seat at one of the round stool at an empty cashier counter to nurse the aches. By around three hours, some people were sitting on the floor now and I am telling myself that I can’t take it anymore. People started complaining why can’t the organizer just give out vouchers instead rather than make everyone wait. Overheard another person saying that one of the staff mentioned that they want to generate the buzz and crowds around the event plus we can see videographer and photographer zooming in and out of the crowds.
It’s 2.15pm now, more than four back breaking hours and I am at my limit before they took pity on us and started giving out Queue Numbers. Instructed us to come back at 4pm to collect the cake. I went home to take my late lunch which was actually my breakfast that mum had bought for me in the morning but I was rushing out. Meanwhile, my neighbour continued her queuing.
