Growing up in the Midwest I had never met another trans person until I was in my mid twenties. My friend Danny had just come out and showed me that it was possible to live an authentic life. I was browsing through my book collection this morning and found this one buried behind my roommates massive stack of national park and wilderness maps.

The first time I read this book was January of 2021 - I was only a few months on T and had just had top surgery. I was adjusting to this new body and all that came with such massive changes happening all at once. Original Plumbing started as a Bay Area zine in 2009 and became a national quarterly print dedicated to trans men. Its final print was published in 2019.

Flipping through the pages there were pictures, stories, and educational pieces - all designed to give trans men a voice and space to freely express themselves. I had never seen so many trans men in one place, 373 pages of trans history and culture at my fingertips. I learned about all the ways to be a man…only to realize there isn’t a singular way. I read about sex and pleasure, something I hadn’t considered an option for myself.

Mostly though? I saw all the possibilities of how I could carve out my own space in this world. That being trans wasn’t all doom and gloom like r/ftm was telling me. That I’m allowed to feel joy and be creative - to want more out of life than flying under the radar to appease those around me.

Original Plumbing was a quarterly theme-based print publication dedicated to trans male culture. Created by Amos Mac and Rocco Kayiatos, Original Plumbing was published for ten years in twenty issues between 2009 and 2019. Each magazine issue covered a wide variety of topics including events and pressing issues to the transmasculine community.

I have finally scanned and uploaded all of the 2010 Spring issue of Original Plumbing to internet archive for people to read for free. This issues focuses on health and safe sex in a transmasculine context, and features interviews, articles, and artist spotlights. But I do have something to share with OP, because it happened after I finished dancing at the OP issue #2 release party, which was amazing by the way. It was about 7am, I was finally laying down to go to bed, still buzzing with the excitement of the night. Suddenly I thought, "I'm a transsexual and I'm beautiful!" and I realized I had never said that out loud before, so I did... and I started balling my eyes out. The journey of self-love has been such a long and sometimes painful process. But, I have to say, ever since that night, I feel unstoppable.
