What are your thoughts on Bedelia with Hannibal on the plane? I certainly wasn't expecting it. Do you think she was playing along with Hannibal the entire time? Or that it's something else entirely? I know Fuller is dedicating the first episode to Bedelia, so hopefully we'll get some answers.
I was expecting an appearance of Bedelia because David Slade posted a bts pic of Gillian and Mads mentioning that it was from Mizumono (although she filmed all her scenes in Tome Wan and Mizumono in one day because she hadn’t time to do more).
But that by the time i reached the emotional parts of the finale, i forgot completely about her and was surprised too to see her reappearing on the plane. This scene was perfectly directed and edited by David Slade and gave me a strange feeling of peace and satisfaction for the quality of the execution of this plot, even though i wasn’t at all rooting for Hannibal to escape.
About the meaning of this scene, i think it’s safe to say that all Bedelia’s scenes since her first appearance in Sorbet to Sakizuzki have established quite firmly that she wasn’t in cahoots with Hannibal.
She was really investigating him through their therapy sessions: all their subtile dialogues point that she was trying carefully to filter the informations that she got from his person suit to reduce them to their essential and true meanings.
He also forced her hand on few occasions: to get her to eat with him and to speak to Jack to cover him . Finally she was sincerelly threatened when she went to Hannibal’s office to announce the end of their patient/ therapist relationship and she looked like someone who isn’t certain to make it alive from the place.
The only real secret that she ever shared with him until then was her responsability in the death of their patient and it was largely not intentional on her side. IMO, it couldn’t make her his accomplice although she was necessarily protecting him.
I support the theory that she probably contacted Hannibal after her meeting with Will and the signing of her immunity.
For that i understood, Gillian is signing to become a regular on the show: so not only the 1st episode of season 3 should be entirely dedicated to her and her relationship with Hannibal but she will probably appear if her schedule allows it in all the episodes of the 1st arc of the season.
Personally i’m very happy to have Gillian getting more screen time on my favorite show.
Bryan said that a her scenes in Tome Wan gave us a good taste of her attitude and motivations in season 3. Based on that, my expectations for season 3 are
She’ll pick up where Will stopped and become a real accomplice. She won’t try to fake it and will embrace Hannibal’s madness (cannibalism and justification of murders included) but i hope only to a certain point. I don’t think she will necessarily be convinced by his conceptions on life and human nature. She might just have stopped to judging him for it and temporarly stopped to prevent him to commit his crimes in order to study him and learn from him like Bryan said.
I think she will have kept somewhere in her mind her idea to get him caught and take revenge for her attack. Although spending one year with Hannibal, living by his rules, and pursuing a sexual and maybe romantic relationship with him surely should have make her reconsider her determination. Bryan has described her as being the smartest character on the show and the fandom sees her as a female version of Hannibal, but i’m not sure she has the same capacity as him to compartimentalize her thoughts and her emotions, so i expect to see her struggling a little in terms of where her loyalties lie.
Bryan promised us the disclosure of her attack and i think he kept few unrevealed twisst to this story, to entertain us.
I would like her to continue to show some weakness like underestimating certains characters like Jack and Will. She never believed that they were competent enough to catch Hannibal and i would like her to be proved wrong.
Although she might developed an interesting relationship with Will based on his probably curiosity and maybe fascination for someone who followed Hannibal where himself he couldn’t, i would rather have her get more interactions with female characters.
Thanks for asking about Bedelia. I’m so hyped for her storyline and would love to get new spoilers to speculate more about her.
