An Archive of Our Own, a project of the Organization for Transformative Works
If you ever went down to the valley in the early, early morning, when the air was cool and the sun was just beginning to show its face, you might see something quite special [...] If you stayed, you’d catch the head of something monstrous poking hesitantly up from under the water. And then, without warning, you’d see a pumpkin rise out of the ground.
At the very first crack of dawn, a ghost and a merling - Shubble and Niki - each give the other a token of their affection.
