“This piece of art was made by a very young person. What is your excuse?”
Excuse for what? That I am not a prodigy, that I do not know how to sculpt marble, that I don’t have the resources to be an amazing artist?
I am not Mozart, or Bernini, or Da Vinci. I did not live in their time, I never had the same resources as they did. I live in the modern day, during which there is a pandemic raging, during which a child must go to school and learn certain things - we are not allowed to just hone our craft and forget everything else.
Don’t get me wrong, I think that living in the modern day is great. We learn a lot more than the so-called masters, we are more accepting, and we are trying to right the wrongs of the past. Modern day is amazing, and I don’t think I’d be as happy living in the past.
So why on Earth do we talk like this, like being a master at a young age is everything? Why should I have an excuse for being me, for still learning my skills? If (remember to stress the ‘if’) I make a masterpiece in the future, will it have less value than all the masterpieces made by child prodigies? Will I be less than because I did not have the support of rich men at the young age of seven? Will I be less than because I did not compose an aria before my teen years?
I am a human being, is that not enough? Why should I make masterpieces when I can make my friends laugh, when I can bring joy to my own circle?
I am a regular human being who is still learning their craft. What is your excuse for making people feel less than some guy who’s been dead for centuries?
