The Lesser Courts of the Fae
The two different kinds of courts are separated into lower courts. This is when we start getting into the actually creatures of the court and not just how their political system works. Along with the main lesser court, many faeries separate into even lesser courts based on race. This goes across the board no matter where you go.
These fae have only mastery over at most two elements of nature and often have a main that might derive from their behaviors and personalities. Just like human high schools separate into clicks, the fae separate themselves magically based on their personalities.
Barrowfolk:
These little guys are otherwise known as Hobbits but will politically correct you to their preferred phrase. They’re always part of the Seelie Court and are quite jovial in their communities. Now I know a lot of you are going to associate them with the movie with Bilbo Baggins and Frodo Baggins. However the movie itself couldn't be farther from the truth. They dwell in little within the hills and spend much of their time helping each other. Their festivities are quite something to behold and I encourage being very careful if you ever cross one.
Brownie:
Brownies are the little, house cleaners that have their own sense of OCD. They live within old houses that haven’t been changed in years and help humans keep it clean. Yes, the humans tend to be missing cream after every cleaning but it is a small price to pay for a happy, clean home. They coexist with humans and are ones of the few that will do such. They’re abilities allow them to levitate and of course, cloaking themselves to human view. These little guys swing to both courts based on how the household is.
Jack-in-Irons:
These are giants said to roam lonely, quiet roads at night. They are associated with the Unseelie Court. He is said to wear the heads of his victims and wields a large, spiked club. These giants tend to have mostly human features except fot the face which is of a boar with two large tusks. Jack isn’t technically this giants name but its a way of calling it an unknown character.
Phookas:
Phookas are well known tricksters throughout England and can shift their shapes depending on what they feel like. The shapes will mostly consist of a horse, a dog, or a human but it may just be a mix of any of the stated creatures. They split themselves among the courts, the Seelie preferring tricks while the Unseelie liking to eat humans for any meal of the day. They are said to live near ancient stones and be of Celtic origin.
Selkie:
These are Irish originated fae that reside near the seas. They can be near fresh water sources but the oceans are more likely for they change form human to seal after stepping out of their skins. They are most vulnerable in this change and can die if killed. They can be seen along the coasts leading from Ireland all the way to Canadian coastline. Native American Indians also have stories referring to selkies though most may have been distorted by the use of oral story telling. They are not very dangerous and are part of the Seelie Courts.
As this is a very long article it has been split in two. I don’t have the energy to sit for long periods of time and there’s a new expedition coming along. If you wish for any more information on any of the above mentioned creatures ask away.
Truly yours,
~Djabuti Jerald~
