#orphan characters

When I read a serious (or trying to be serious) book, I am put off by the amount of characters that are orphans simply because the author didn't feel like giving them a family.

Your character isn't nearly fucked up enough to be an orphan. Why are they emotionally stable and well adjusted? My friend Fitz is good at this because he is crazy but some of you are too chill about that

The orphan in children's literature allows the child protagonist to move the story forward themselves. I think that, however happy a family, every intelligent child thinks: 'How did I come to be born to these parents?' - it is about finding your place in the world.
