Adèle Haenel and Adèle Exarchopoulos promoting Orpheline on Quotidien - March 27, 2020

Around 0:40- Yann Barthes the presenter says that he didn’t know the song of the film (that you can hear at the end of the film)but he loves it . And Adèle H says « yes, I agree ».
0:50 - 1:40 - Yann asks both Adèle(s) to say something about each other. And Adèle H says that Adèle E is very generous, instinctive and extremely nice. And then Adèle E says that’s it’s hard because she feels like complimenting each other kind of cancel the effect when they’re side by side. And Adèle H whispers that they’re not really seated side by side. And Yann says they are next to each other and Adèle E adds that they almost touch other. And then she says that Adèle H is rigorous, generous and hard working.
1:40 - 2:10 - Yann quotes Adèle E who said about Adèle H that she infuses politics in her films’ choice. And Adèle E says « I said this ? » and they laugh. And then she said « fuck that’s why I shouldn’t talk too much because I don’t remember why I said this. No but I can sense the (political) involvement in her films ». And Adèle H adds that she always claimed that political part of her, it’s important for her and you can’t separate that from artistic choices.
2:10 - 2:55 - Yann talks about the film and its particularity since 4 actresses plays the same character, and the actresses never play in the same scene. And they say they only ran into each other from time to time when the weren’t on set. Adèle H sais that they had run into each other before that film but not a lot. And Adèle E says that it’s just like bus drivers, you just say « hey » from afar *waves her hand*.
4:30 - 5:20 : Adèle H explains the plot saying it’s a film about a woman in 4 different key periods of her life and 4 different actresses play those different periods.
Then Yann asks why it’s called « orphan » when the character isn’t an orphan. And Adèle E says it’s to express her loneliness. And Adèle H says that technically being an orphan is not to have parents who are here for you, who support you and who love you and that’s the story of the character. The character is trying to fill that lack of love from her parents.
5:20 - 6:38 - The presenter asks if they talked to each other to create that character. Adèle E said that the director didn’t want them to do that. They had to only focus on their part. They could be a bit inspired by the past of the character but not on the future. So she only focused on her part and not on the other different periods. And she says that they liked the way the character was totally different every time, that people all have different identities depending on the people you meet, the experience you live etc. And they only saw how the other actresses played the character when the film came out.
Adèle H adds that it was the whole project of the film, of the story. To try to explain what is a person and that in life we can be different people.
6:40 - 9:40 : Yann says they found some old footage of them. And they found that interview of Adèle E when she was like 15. And you can hear Adèle E say « olala you’re assholes » lmao. And you can also here Adèle H dying and saying « olalalaaaa !! » when she sees teenage Adèle E with short hair hahaha.
And then it’s Adèle H’s turn and you can see that she’s quite scared and embarrassed haha. Then they show both of them winning Césars.
And Yann noticed Adèle H doesn’t like seeing herself and she replies « bah oui it’s very embarrassing ». And he says that she’ll have to see herself again for that next clip because they need her to explain a sentence she said in an interview she did when she was 20. And Adèle H dies lmao. (and I can’t even translate that because I did not understand what she tried to say)
And she says that she actually understood what she said back then but she’s not sure she’s going to explain it better than that. And so she’s trying to find a way to explain it but she can’t and says « ah ça fait chier » which I don’t even know how to translate. And she keeps trying but fails and at the end she tells Yann « you see you put me in deep shit » haha. And Yann teases her and says « no but don’t worry we understood » and she replies « yeah right ».
*also one funny thing here. Yann uses « vous » when he talks to his guests but Adèle doesn’t do the same and uses « tu » when she talks to him aha*
9:40 - 11:46: Yann talks about how there are quite a lot of nudity and sex scenes in this film and he asks them if when they read a script they pay more attention to those scenes. And as a joke Adèle E says « well that was the first time for me so I was super nervous » (which is not the case obviously since she did BITWC). He didn’t catch the joke at first but then he says that it must still be quite intimidating. And she said of course and it’s very awkward. And he adds that she must have been asked that question a thousand time with BITWC. Then she says that it’s all about taking with the director. And no it’s not that she doesn’t care about it, but she likes films that are about flesh, about skin but it’s all about how you do it and it’s the director’s job to do it well and to see if it’s justified or not. And there are also some things you’re willing to do when you’re younger that you wouldn’t do later in your life.
Then he quotes Adèle H saying that she prepares those scenes as a boxer. And she replies as a joke « yeah well I say a lot of things and you saw how sometimes I answer questions so it’s not always comprehensible ». And he quotes her again « I refuse to show that I’m scared so I pretend to show off ». And she says there’s a little bit of that too. But she adds that the relationship with the director isn’t the most intimate in those scenes. There’s something that is very intimate about being looked at, and not because you’re suddenly naked.
And he asks what is more intimate than being naked on set. Adèle E says it’s a different kind of modesty. And then Adèle H says something pretty great but it’s really hard to translate it because it’s a pretty French expression that doesn’t really exist in English I believe ? She says that being « à nu » is more intimate than being « nue ». Which means it’s not being physically naked that is more intimate but exposing yourself entirely, not only your body but also your feelings, emotions etc. To reveal yourself entirely I guess ? Which is different than being just naked.
11:46 - 12:02 - Then the presenter asks what’s the first criterion when they choose a film. Adèle H says the desire. And he ask what kind of desire ? The desire to work with specific actors ? The desire for the film, the director ? And she replies that doing a film is not the accumulation of good reasons, it’s juste a desire, the one reason is that she wants to do the film. It’s more than just a story, it’s about something that goes beyond that, something transversal that makes her want to do it.
And for Adèle E it’s an encounter with a person, a subject, a story, a character.
12:02 - end : Then he talks about some of their fantasies and he quotes Adèle E who said that she would love to be in a X Men film, which she confirms. And Adèle H mumbles « oh I thought you were talking about me I was very confused » aha.
And for Adèle H she said « film fantasy you mean ? » and Adèle E laughs and she asks why she laughed and she says it’s because she had to ask if the fantasy was a film fantasy (and not some other kind of fantasy *wink wink*). But then she replies « well if you tell me to run on a horse with a haw in my hand while yelling “yaaaa”, I would do it but it’s probably not the best film to do. »
