"You were wild once. Don't let them tame you."
---
The world is old yet new again, and she's more confused than ever.
Life should be a gift, but it's also a curse. She's no stranger to that feeling. On her darkest days she longed for oblivion; she wanted to cease to exist.
Mimi always told her to be careful what she asked for, and now she knows why her surrogate mother's eyes clouded over on occasion. Did she foresee this?
She's never felt this alien in her own skin, and the word choice isn't lost on her. Her life is a blessing but his death is the curse.
She sees the conflict in her sister's eyes... the way she rejoices and mourns in the same breath.
She sees the wisdom in them too. Liz has lived, and it's all she ever wanted for her sister. She would have died a thousand deaths of her own doing to ensure it, but it wasn't supposed to happen without her.
The world has tilted on its axis and nothing is as it seems.
She's processing so much now. How even in death she caused her family trouble and grief ... how her image can never be her own.
She cannot reclaim it or start over anew, and there is something painful about that. Her chest aches in a way she cannot put to words. It's like she carries him with her.
She's inextricably linked to that doofy boy she warned off her sister, except he isn't a boy--he wasn't a boy. He was a man.
Time didn't stop while she was away she sees it in her sisters eyes and the creases in Kyle Valenti's face, and the light gone from Alex's eyes.
She sees it in that image of her papa Liz shows her, and she chokes back a sob.
When she went away it was supposed to be to get better on her own terms, but she was robbed of choice again.
When she returned it was supposed to be when she was better -- better for them, but better for herself.
She feels an overwhelming sense of guilt. She abandoned them like her mother had, and it doesn't matter if she didn't do it on purpose it happened all the same.
And she left them in a world where they had to get on without her, but what hurts her most is that maybe they would have gotten on without her.
But even in death her reputation was nothing more than a black stain on a small town too committed to misunderstanding her, and her family paid the price for that.
She wants to wallow in that. She always suspected she would know no peace even in death, but she never realized the ones who live pay the price.
She knows she's supposed to understand these circumstances, but she cannot.
The girl she thought was her friend was an abomination. She knows what it's like to be seized by something-- she knows how it feels to have something take hold of you, consume you, possess you, and yet all she sees is the face of the person who hurt her most.
All she sees is the last face she saw before everything went dark.
She knows forgiveness and has been on the receiving end of it often.
But despite the overwhelming love she feels toward her sister, some of which may not be solely her own, she cannot understand how her sister forgives.
It was never in her. She takes after their mother in more ways than one, and her sister's purity and goodness does not dissuade her from her feelings.
She knows she's supposed to sympathize but she feels the animosity from that rabble rouser Alex obsessed over.
But she doesn't have time for sympathy. She lost enough time already.
They already treat her like she's made of glass, but if so, she's a jagged shard who draws blood.
She cannot be comforted or coddled when all has gone to hell.
She closes her eyes as the burning flames rise in her and consume her. A spitfire like their mother.
Her mother's voice in her ear a whisper of a memory. "You were wild once, querida," she whispered into her hair nodding at Arturo and Liz. "Don't let them tame you."
She opens her eyes, unspoken words clawing their way up her throat. She throws her head back face up toward the desert sky. And she screams.
I was thinking about that Crashdown menu gifset by @itslizortecho
And I love the idea of Arturo being overly excited and nerdy about all the alien mythology when he moved to Roswell. Him going to Roswell’s UFO Emporium and looking at photos, newspaper clippings, supposed alien artifacts. Him not being sure he believes it, but finding it all pretty cool regardless. He starts his own little collection (and it’s what he ends up using to decorate the Crashdown).
Not to mention:
Scully’s sweet potato fries and Shatner’s Special Shake.
Arturo definitely started watching The X-Files and Star Trek, right? Like, he made Rosa and Liz watch episodes with him when they were old enough. Rosa wasn’t really into it but went along with it; meanwhile Liz loved those shows, and it’s what triggered her interest in science as a kid. Arturo had a notebook on the arm of his chair when they watched episodes together, and he’d absently jot down recipes and sci-fi puns. Liz/Rosa went from loving all of his sci-fi Dad Puns and thinking he was an absolute genius, to dying from embarrassment over them, to loving them unironically again because they’re cute.
If Arturo has dreams of going to Comic Con I’m going to yell.
