Were the Moors black?

That is actually a really complicated question, because in the time when the Moors existed, the notion of color based racism was…very different from what it is today.  The historical moors were a people in North Africa who were a mix of the Arabs arriving during the conquest, and the local Berber people, to say nothing of the many subsaharah Africans who arrived later.  Critically, the people never actually called themselves Moors, it was a term used by non North Africans to describe the people of the region, mostly Europeons and middle eastern Arabs.   There isn’t really a “Moorish” people, it was more just an abstract word to descibe non arab non berber north Africans.  The term later changed to mean “Muslim invaders of Spain” and for awhile Spanish Muslims were just called Moors.  Also in the 17th century, Europeons used the term to just mean “Black people from North Africans”   Then Moor changed again to mean “Swarthy looking” and described a certain type of face.  It isn’t really a term with a a single absolute meaning.   It doesn’t really have a consistent meaning so depending on the time period of when the term is used, then it means black, or it means Spanish Muslims, or it means a mix of Berber and Arabic North African.  Actually today there is a group who claim the term Moor as a self identifier in the nation of Mauritania and Mali, specifically the Arab-Amazigh peoples.  

   Unless you specifically mean the Moorish empire of Spain (they didn’t call themselves that btw), which was mixed race.
