The family of Osaze Osagie, along with the American Civil Liberties Union of Pennsylvania, issued its first statement since Osagie was shot and killed by State College police. The family is advocating for transparency and for reform in law enforcement.
29-year-old African-American Osaze Osagie was mentally disabled, diagnosed with autism. His parents became worried about him one day in March, because he was “acting erratically, similar to when he was off his medication.” So they called the police for help.
Three officers went to Osagie’s residence and attempted to serve a “mental health warrant” on him. Osagie, being autistic, did not peacefully comply; according to the police, he “ignored several verbal commands, brandished a knife and ‘came after the officers.’”
So they shot him dead.
No doubt this is the very outcome Osagie’s parents wanted when they called the police for help with their mentally disabled son.
