Hello did you happen to see Jada Pinkett Smith video this morning about the academy awards. I was just wondering about your thought on it ?
I haven’t seen the video yet, but I saw her series of tweets over the weekend (and related comments from other people). My mom and I have also been arguing about whether or not Chris Rock should drop out of hosting–I think he needs to leave, Mom says he has a divorce to pay for, so…
I agree with her. The Academy Awards were the last award show I watched after quitting the others throughout the years. The only reason I continued to watch them were out of tradition, even though I was frustrated by annual “sameness” among the winners, and the lack of POC representation. I will not be watching this year.
Ultimately, this is my final reminder that we need to stop seeking validation from institutions that favor the accomplishments of white people. We need to either create our own institutions and honors, or find a way to be happy for our successes. Waiting for the Academy Awards to recognize us is proving to be futile.
