I think what the anon doesn't understand is that choosing to boycott or to pirate instead is about personal integrity, not about harming other individuals. Like as not, if you go see that film, you will be putting money in the author's pocket and money is a powerful thing. Even if my ticket doesn't even make a dent in their profits, if I do, in full knowledge, provide someone with money to support causes that I strongly disagree with, then I would have damaged my personal integrity.

Okay okay okay last one I promise.

I usually separate the author’s personal life and views/opinions when I read their books. If people want to read the book, they should read it. If they don’t want to then don’t. Having your own opinion is always better than following others.

Its not very often that I'll have a lot of background knowledge about an author before I read their work, its more oh this sounds interesting so I will read it. The only authors I knew bits and pieces about before/during reading their work were J. K. Rowling and Stephen King simply because how big she is in the UK and how big he is in my Dads eyes and I picked up bits of information here and there and after I read a book that I like I wont necessarily do research into the author either, the only authors who I've gotten to know more about are those who openly talk to me / have blogs that I catch now and then / facebook groups (yeah totally talking about The Radishes here). It just so happened I heard this and wondered if it really was such a big thing :)

I still want to read this book. I know how horrible the author is, but a lot of the time I separate the author from his work, especially when they’re really horrible.

Mhmm yes, I can totally understand not wanting to read some of his others books should they be filled with homophobic subtext

Why do you care about people involved in making the movie? Would you also oppose banning gas cameras during WWII, because that would cause many German soldiers to lose jobs and income? Those people make lots of money, and if you and other 3 people from tumblr don't buy their stuff, they will barely feel any difference.

I kind of think you're missing the point here.Also why compare something that has happened and can not be changed to something that hasn't yet happened which it can/could be prevented should a large amount of people want too~It's not "me and three people"; and I'm not even "boycotting" the movie, I'm simply not watching because I haven't read and wanted to hear other peoples opinions on the situation.

These are how Ender's Game in currently looking from my GR friends, to read/wishlist: 61 people currently reading: 1 person 5 stars: 26 people 4 stars: 9 people 3 stars: 9 people Just showing that even with the authors "bad standing" it hasn't seemed to effect many peoples opinion of the book. I skimmed all those that reviewed it and no one mentions the authors opinions, maybe they dont know, maybe they know and are not letting it affect their opinion on what seems to be a good book.

In response to what the anon just posted about many people's incomes relying on the movie, those people can be split into two categories: people that receive royalties, people that don't. Most of the actors, set designers, caterers and many that work on the film will receive a set fee, so your ticket gives them no money at all. A select few receive royalties: director, producer, a few sponsors, possibly the headline actor (depending on the agreement) and normally the author of the book.

Boycott. I bought Ender’s Game in a second hand shop for 2€ before I knew about him being an asshole and I’m glad I didn’t buy a new copy.

Oh I like the idea of buying it from a second hand shop (even if you did it unintentionally).

Before now I had no idea that Orson Scott Card was homophobic. I don't necessarily think people should stop reading his books, but I don't think I'll be buying any of them or going to see Ender's Game when it comes out. I see no harm in reading his books, I just wouldn't want any royalties he makes from them going to anti-gay organizations. I'm torn because I loved Ender's Game, but as a member of the LGBTQ communtiy I don't want to support someone who is so openly against homosexuality.

This is one of the reasons I brought it up, because I simply didn't know until I watched a gaming video! I thought it was odd it hadn't been brought up before and wanted to see how others felt on the situation.Maybe I'll write a blog post on Northern Plunder and see what the other community has to say.
