Much appreciation for the determined team effort to loft nine sails just as the sun set on the last full day of our journey. Takeoff (LAX to MKE) 2010✈️Looking forward to doing this again sometime soon (but not quite yet!) Stay safe, my friends. We may well be on verge of beating this thing, but still need to stay the course for another month or two. It is always a pleasure to takeoff from LAX, but at sunrise with a storm coming off the Pacific, it is pure enchantment. Autonomous groups of clouds have formed on different levels, and in the distance there is virga: rain that evaporates before it reaches the earth. The dark landform at the center is Palos Verde Peninsula. In Transit (AMS to LAX) 2014 ✈️Returning from Nairobi to Los Angeles via Amsterdam Schiphol Airport, our @KLM flight flew over the orderly agricultural and industrial landscape of the Netherlands. I trained a telephoto lens on what appears to be a rock-processing plant with railroad and maritime shipping facilities. “Miniature faking” has become a popular trick whereby life-size locations are made to look like scale models by blurring the top and bottom of the image using a tilt-shift lens or later in Photoshop. Here, air disturbance from the jet exhaust achieves the same illusion at the moment of capture, without the use of special equipment. This type of in-camera alchemy is at the heart of my photographic practice; adding another layer of casual surrealism to this depiction of modern commercial aviation.
