Photographing the Dark: Nadar’s Descent into the Paris Catacombs – The Public Domain Review
Today the Paris Catacombs are illuminated by electric lights and friendly guides. But when Félix Nadar descended into this “empire of death” in the 1860s artificial lighting was still in its infancy: the pioneering photographer had to face the quandary of how to take photographs in the subterranean dark. Allison C. Meier explores Nadar’s determined efforts (which involved Bunsen batteries, mannequins, and a good deal of patience) to document the beauty and terror of this realm of the dead.

the prophet looks vv cool! I’d love to hear about them if ur willing to share!
OK ive sorted my shit and im ready to talk now. so the Prophet of the city is the central figure in the city’s religion (neither the city nor the religion have a name because there’s only one of them) and their job is basically to have visions. generally these come about naturally (i.e. not through usage of psychoactive substances, although sometimes it can help). the city exists in the middle of a desert inside a half-formed protective bubble and has for many centuries (since before everyone else left), and its religion has existed in about the same way for about the same time. Prophets change regularly because it is a voluntary position and rather stressful because you don’t do much (or paid much), so the specifics of the religion can also change based on one individual or even a single vision. but there are some parts that normally stick around: for instance, the night is viewed as the most holy time because the day can be too hot to live in and, by extension, the Moon is often personified into a “primary” Deity. there is also a Council who are tasked with both the running of the city and the interpretation of the Prophet’s visions, and (depending on how cynical the Council members are) they can shape a narrative around what they want people to believe. a core tenet of the religion is often called “mutual aid”, but the Council argues that this refers to “people helping people” (read: working-class people sharing their stuff) and that therefore they are exempt from this because, uhhh, look over there!
