It's time to live up to my name and talk about politics and Loona at the same time because, right now, they are inseparable.

As many of you already know, it was announced today that Chuu has been kicked out of Loona.

First, let's examine why BBC says it happened

Now, this explanation is very vague and, to be honest, is mostly waffle, but let's unpack the core message. Basically, the claim here is that Chuu was somehow abusive to staff at BBC and this is why she was kicked out.

Does this allegation hold any water? Well, it is always possible that any idol could be horrible in real life. Assuming that we know who they are and what they are like is just another form of parasocial relationship and can be just as damaging as conforming to the original meaning of the term 'stan'. However, we can take the evidence of people who actually know Chuu. For example, one of the former writers on Chuu can do it, Chuu's YouTube show, came out to say that Chuu is know to be full of concern for the wellbeing of staff and believes that it is her duty to ensure everyone takes care of themselves (see below). As this is a former writer, we can assume that they are not lying to keep her job. As a result, it would seem that Chuu really is as nice as she seems, which is affirming.

Now, we can just debunk these claims, but let's scrutinise them a little further. You see, BBC claimed, in their statement, to value respect for their staff to the point where it is supposedly one of their main principles going forward. This raises the question: If they really value respect for staff and if Chuu really did abuse her power to disrespect them so thoroughly they decided to fire probably the most famous member of Loona, why wait until now? Presumably, BBC want to convince us that Chuu's hiatus was actually a suspension. I mean, that is the only explanation that doesn't involve BBC thinking we're stupid enough to swallow the idea that they're totally unconnected. This rather puts a hole in the idea that BBC are being entirely honest here because if they were and they did value staff respect, they wouldn't have made such a vague statement and they would have kicked Chuu out much sooner. In fact, I don't think anything about BBC's approach is honest at all.

It comes down to, as it always does, the abuse of the worker by the employer.

Think about it, a worker is subject to the terms of an unfair contract and a dodgy employer. That same employer doesn't pay the worker for 4 years, despite them working diligently. This causes the worker to take more drastic action. When they do so, the employer fires them and spreads insidious rumours to ensure they have difficulty finding work.

You see, someone has been abusing their power here, and it's not Chuu. To put it plainly, BBC's higher ups are greedy, manipulative shits who believes a stipend of arms money gives them the right to abuse their workforce. At this point, who knows how deep it goes? If BBC think they can get away with mistreating one of their most prevalent artists, how do you think they treat the people who keep the wheels turning. Chuu just has the platform to have anything that she does against BBC reported on, what about those who don't?

Now I'm not trying to claim that Chuu is a great revolutionary or working class hero. However, hers is a struggle that we must recognise as being a problem that isn't just limited to her. If you're outraged at BBC right now, then you have to be just as outraged at companies like Tesla, who close down assembly plants that threaten to unionise. This is not to lessen Chuu's problems, but to recognise them as part of a larger pattern of how commercialism, capitalism, and those who prop up these ideals and systems will exploit anyone as long as they think they can get away with it. The onus of changing this falls to us, to the people - of all places, backgrounds, and walks of life.

One more thing before I go: changing things doesn't have to mean never using Amazon or never buying a Loona album. You do not have to pay the price for the fact that there is no ethical consumption under capitalism. All products ultimately rely on some form of worker exploitation. The only alternative would be living completely off the grid and that's not the best way of campaigning for change.

I’m incredibly sad right now because of Mashiho and Yedam leaving treasure. it doesn’t feel real that we won’t get to see them with everyone anymore. Still, I wish them the best and I’ll always be grateful for the joy they brought into my life. OT12 will always live on in all our hearts
