Looking back at last year’s dorama adaptation (which made me go WTF) and the long awaited Japanese live adaptation of Attack on Titan (which is pretty disappointing, except the CGI tho). I kinda positive with this one
It felt like I was giving one of the shows I talked about a little too much credit during the "new vs. old" anime rants. But after the shitstorm that was the second and third seasons I watched for another rant, I honestly don't care any more. And it's about time I start emphasizing the ANGRY that is my tumblr.
(it's a long rant, have a page break)
There's also the fact that it's not an anime. It's an American-anime hybrid of the worst kind, filled with soon-to-be-dated catchphrases and a cast of characters that can only be called mary sues. Instead of being contained and single story, it's a jumbled mess of what it wants to be.
And oh does it try to be something. Though it does fall under a similar anime that most people of the time hated. That being-
But unlike GX that finally decided to take itself a bit more seriously towards the end, making it better, Juusen Battle Monsuno dials everything back down to the minimalist of what can constitute as a cartoon. Which is the true root of evil here. (But I'm getting ahead of myself).
For almost all of you who don't know what it's about, think of a diluted, American version of pokemon
(cause we all know how well that went in the past).
It's got your stereotypical hero -
(who I just realized was also the voice actor of Judai in Yugioh GX… weird)
-with the character cliches that are his companions, along with the obvious not-pokemon given to him by not-professor oak. There's some sort of prophecy, an army, a bad guy, another bad guy, something to do with spirituality, a third bad guy, and almost no consistency in what genre it is.
The story is as bland and predictable as oatmeal. The characters don't have any backstory or character development beyond season one. And what little it has is not very investing. (and some of it doesn't even make sense some times). The animation is expressionless and pretty much like season five of yugioh if more effort was put in the fighting animations, which is mostly just stock footage anyway.
(seriously. Can you tell what they're thinking? I sure as hell can't)
And the sad part is that it wasn't that bad in season one. Even thought the characters were trying to be like every other anime protagonist, they at least knew what to do.
Of course it was trying to be some easy to market not-anime for children in the first place (all the videos and images i searched were of the toys alone).
And that is no fucking excuse not to put effort into a children's show.
There have been a large chunk of American shows that have managed to be good and deep, some of which we weren't even expecting sometimes, that were meant for children. Need I remind you?
The same goes for anime.
Anime can target almost any audience and still make a decent enough story without having to rely too much on cliches. Even the cliches have made their own styles like magic girls series. How is it that this series - a combination of both - failed so much?
Oh yeah. Aliens.
It wasn't spirits or technology or the mysterious destiny crap that was what caused everything in the series. It wasn't building up to some great reveal of a science experiment gone wrong, or a spirit that is all powerful.
It was fucking aliens.
Geez imagine if instead of Raava in Korra, it was an alien? Or that Titans in SNK were actually aliens? (though I shouldn't jinx it seeing that they still haven't gotten to that godforsaken basement).
It's frustrating. It's stupid. And I just hope future American anime mixtures can at least try and put more effort. If not into the story, at least in either the characters or animation.
A good friend of mine wrote it and published it over the summer, and so far, it is pretty good! Please support him by getting this book from amazon and reading it, it would be greatly appreciated!
That is all.
