Song Review: Jaco Pastorius - “Bluesette” (Live - June 27, 1982)

With Jaco Pastorius’ fretless bass, Toots Thielesmans’ uncanny harmonica and Othello Molineaux’s steel drums at the fore, “Bluesette” isn’t bluesy at all; rather the short track more resembles a five-minute, Caribbean excursion.

Premiered at Relix.com, “Bluesette” is culled from the forthcoming album Jaco Pastorius: Truth, Liberty & Soul - Live in NYC: The Complete 1982 NPR Jazz Alive Recording. The two-CD set features Pastorious and his 22-piece - including 16 horn players - Word of Mouth Big Band, plus special guest Thielesmans.

Pastorius had recently left Weather Report when this gig was captured on tape in mid-‘82 and “Bluesette” shows the elastic bassist, now serving as bandleader, unafraid to cede the spotlight to other players in service of the music. Mostly a showcase for Thielesmans and Molineaux, the lead single is among the shortest tracks on Truth, Liberty & Soul, and with no horns, is likely not representative of the bulk of the music on the 130-minute LP, out May 26 on CD on on vinyl for Record Store Day, April 22.
