for the writing autistic characters - PLEASE STAY AWAY FROM STEREOTYPES
it’s so easy to forget that you’re writing a real person and not some ‘imaginative autistic’. please keep in mind that we’re normal people,
my friend tried to write a story with a character being autistic and they were seen as emotionless, time persistent, robotic… and when i explained how that’s not how we work she got mad. so please remember they’re normal people.
we stim, we’ve got special interests, but we’re not some aliens who speak another language. some are incredibly smart, some are incredibly talented and gifted but we’re more than just “reece who can play cello, wow look at her go! that’s all she is. a cello playing robot!” i’m not!! i have favourite bands, i forget about deadlines, i have meltdowns when i’m overwhelmed. i love it when teachers watch movies instead of teach.
in my opinion, (which not everyone can agree with and that is totally okay!) write your autistic character as what society perceives as ‘normal’ and then add in autistic details later. but please make them more than autistic.
personally, i wouldn’t write about a character unless you also experience what they do. it’s the only way to get them to be authentic and true to yourself, why would someone with working legs write about someone who uses a wheelchair when they have absolutely no idea what they experience everyday? see, it just wouldn’t make sense. plus, the last thing anyone wants is another rendition of sia’s movie.
(but again, this is just my opinion and preference, obviously not everyone will agree with me and that’s okay!)
okay, that’s all, rice out <3 ✌️
thank you!!
for the earlier anon who asked ❤️❤️❤️
