What is Otoplasty?
Otoplasty is a cosmetic surgical procedure designed to reshape, reposition, or reduce the size of the ears in order to improve their appearance and achieve better facial harmony. It is most commonly performed to correct prominent or protruding ears, but it can also address asymmetry, deformities caused by injury, or congenital ear conditions. Otoplasty can be performed on both adults and children, typically after the age of five, when the ears have reached near-full development. The procedure often has a significant positive impact on self-confidence and psychological well-being.
The otoplasty procedure is usually carried out under local anesthesia for adults and general anesthesia for children. During the surgery, the surgeon makes a small incision behind the ear, allowing access to the cartilage. The cartilage is then reshaped, folded, or repositioned closer to the head using specialized techniques and internal sutures. Because the incision is placed behind the ear, visible scarring is minimal and generally well hidden within the natural folds of the skin. The operation typically lasts one to two hours, depending on the complexity of the case.
Recovery from otoplasty is relatively quick and comfortable. Patients usually wear a supportive head bandage for a few days to protect the ears and maintain their new position. Mild swelling, bruising, or discomfort may occur but typically resolves within one to two weeks. Most individuals can return to daily activities and work within a short period, while strenuous activities should be avoided for several weeks.
Otoplasty provides long-lasting results, as the reshaped cartilage maintains its new form permanently.
