This is so late (as always) but here's an excerpt from Our Treacherous Paths!

When they reached the other room, Alisha made the mistake of moving too fast and opened the door and its creaks rang out. She entered the room before the guard could turn around, but left the door open. There was no chance that he won't be checking the room. She unsheathed her sword and focused on the sounds of his footsteps moving towards the room.

Here's an excerpt from Our Treacherous Paths

“Do you really think this was just a once-in-a-while problem or was it a start to something?” Vihaan asked Alisha who had a worried look in her eyes. He knew the answer but he needed to confirm his suspicions.

"Definitely a start to something.” The voice was as stable as always as they both turned around to see Afreen, the third one of them. Her hair hidden under the dark colored hijab she was wearing and eyes shining in thought. She had decided to stay back while Alisha and Vihaan could go and find out about the spreading darkness but must have thought to join them later.

“Don’t you know Orden is known for providing the best facilities to its citizens?” Afreen recited the words that had been spread in the whole world and echoed everywhere. “It has to be a start to something if one of their best facilities just went away at the most important place of the kingdom.”

Alisha seemed lost in thought as she gazed at Afreen; her face a mixture of surprise and relief at Afreen's sudden appearance.

Liya was sitting on the shore of the lake with her legs dipped in it gesturing with her hands ― like she always did ― as she spoke to Vihaan who was sitting beside her. His hair looked ruffled from the numerous times he passed his hand through his usually straight hair, as he added something in hushed tones and nodded off to what Liya said.

MORNING

Alisha woke up with a start the next morning. Her hands moving violently as if they were thrashing into something invisible. She looked around desperately for any traces of a fire, as her breathing kept getting faster. Her eyes were filled with worry and agony as she revisited those events again. The screams of the dream echoed in her ears as she struggled to control her breathing.

It was burning.

All around, the fire moved, roaring and blazing as it came to catch up with her.

It taunted her to keep running.

Her hazy vision called her to stop. The scorching heat in her legs called her to stop.

Give up, give up. There’s no escape anyways.

But she ran. Her slightly burnt-out clothes, not even given a single thought, let out the smell of smoke and burnt hair, the feel of ash, that kept falling from somewhere in the air, on her skin marked a searing reminder of what happened and then suddenly, she was trapped.

That was it.
