I legit teared up watching this whole sequence and had to grab some tissues. Da Jiao did not have to go through the trouble of hiring a sedan chair and spending all that money since Xiuxiu technically was already married to him. But he did it so that he could clear her reputation and let her hold her head up high in the village. In a small village like theirs, a woman’s reputation will make or break her life. By doing this, he’s declaring loudly for all the village that he is proudly marrying Xiuxiu and that she is not a ruined woman who no one wants. Da Jiao, the man that you are! I’m crying and swooning at the same time.

And none for the spineless ex-fiancé.
