“She’s not really living, Delia! She’s not going to wake up and she wouldn’t want to be kept alive with a machine breathing for her like this!”
Abigail didn’t like this situation either; in fact, she hated it. Hated her mother for getting in the car accident that caused this persistent vegetative state in the first place. Hated her sister for wanting to keep the woman live when it was obvious she would never be the same mother they’d had for the past several years. She only wished she could make the younger girl understand this.
“Dammit Delia! She’s not coming back! It doesn’t matter how much we tell her we love her. Her brain is dead. It doesn’t matter how long we keep her hooked up to these stupid machines, she’s never. coming. back. The sooner you accept that the easier it’s going to be for everyone.”
She knew she was being harsh, but until she could get her sister to see what was happening, there was no hope in getting her to accept that their mother was gone, and just because she was technically ‘alive’ with the machines, she would never take a breath of her own again.
“How do you know that it’s not what she would want?! People wake up from comas all the time! I’ve seen it happen lots on TV!”
Between the fact that Delia was still too young to fully comprehend the magnitude of the situation and her brain being far too clouded with grief and a mixture of other negative emotions, it was too hard for her to see the truth, despite knowing it deep down in her heart. Teddy was most certainly a fighter, but she knew when enough was enough. Her spirit was no longer there, and it never would be again. Unfortunately, her youngest daughter wasn’t ready to admit defeat quite yet.
“We gotta at least talk to Dr. Shepherd again. Maybe there’s some kind of surgery that they haven’t tried yet because they think it’s too risky or something.” By this point, the little blonde was desperate enough to try anything that gave them even the tiniest sliver of hope to hold on to. It didn’t matter how experimental, just as long as there was even a minute chance of having her mommy back again.
“Abby, please,” Delia started, now turning to begging and bargaining to hopefully get her way. “I didn’t even get to say goodbye. I was really mad at her that morning, and I was being really mean. What if she thought that I didn’t love her anymore when she left? What if all of this is my fault?” Finally, the truth was out – as was the overflow of guilt and tears.
