The words shocked him. When he’d asked about what Delia wanted to do, getting married wasn’t exactly what he’d had in mind. However, he couldn’t say he was displeased with the idea. Isaac knew that Delia was the one he wanted to spend the rest of his life with, so getting married to her was a no-brainer.
And, he added to himself, it would make her getting his benefits a hell of a lot easier, as well.
He knew that many soldiers eloped before deploying for that very reason, and he thought the idea was actually pretty great. It was something they would be doing eventually anyway, so why not speed the process up a bit, right?
“Let’s do it. Forget an engagement ring and a promise - let’s go down to the courthouse and sign the papers. Then when I get back, we can have a proper ceremony - the wedding of your dreams.” He was very serious about all of this and hoped Delia had been as well. “Cordelia Katherine Burton, will you do me the absolute honor or becoming my wife?” He had to make at least a little bit of it formal, right?
Truthfully, Delia was just as surprised as Isaac was by the words that had slipped out of her mouth. Sure, she'd been thinking about the whole idea more and more the closer Isaac's deployment date got, but the last thing she'd expected was for him to actually go along with the idea, especially when she hadn't meant to voice it out loud in the first place.
Before she had time to process the fact that they were actually about to do this, Isaac was down on one knee proposing. Who knew that such a whirlwind, spur of the moment engagement could still bring her to tears? Blinking them back, head eagerly nodded until Delia was able to find her voice again. "Yes. Yes! Of course. I can't wait to become your wife."
While all she wanted to do was lower herself to his level and celebrate with about a hundred kisses, it suddenly felt like there were around a thousand and two things to do before the couple could officially become husband and wife. Getting a marriage license was only one of them, yet surely the most vital.
"I can't get married looking like this." A blouse and a pair of blue jeans certainly wouldn't feel anywhere near as special as a gorgeous dress, even if it was nothing more than one that'd been hanging up in her closet for months. "Give me an hour and I'll meet you at the courthouse. Once we're married, we'll have the whole rest of the week to celebrate the closest thing to a romantic, relaxing honeymoon as possible."
