Tasting: 2020 YS Bu Lang Mountain Ripe Puerh
The second tasting in a set of cakes, all hailing from different areas of Menghai, China. This puerh comes from the Bu Lang Mountains and was harvest in spring of 2019, wet piled in summer of 2019, and pressed in 2020.
The dry leaf is sweet with pleasing earthy notes of damp tree bark, followed up by sweet toffee, and a faint chocolate smell that I found to be quite similar to the smell of hot chocolate mix when you open the packet. A stronger earthiness emerged from the wet. Scent of dry forest woods blends with the smell of damp garden soil. Fainter aroma of chocolate and an unexpected finish of either hay or alfalfa.
The tea has a strong maltiness that sticks around throughout every infusion. It has a thick and creamy texture which I just love in puerh. It has flavors of rich minerals, eucalyptus which I found left a slight cooling sensation on the tongue. Light hint of chocolate and an earthy taste of wet forest after heavy rain fall.
Overall, I’d say I enjoyed it more than the Meng Song cake, as it really packed that extra bit of punch that I found the Meng Song was lacking. It’s not quite a favorite of mine, but a puerh that no doubt would be good for Everday drinking especially at a great price point of $32.00 for 250g. 3 out of 5 stars.
