I would like to posit that perhaps Tim refers to the Rose Reds in Gender Rebels' Our Boy Jack as "she" because he was once a soldier. Jonny always refers to them as "it" because he can't relate to them. But Tim remembers his time in the lunar war. He knows how dehumanising it can be. Even though they're clones, he feels for them.

He won't let Jonny bastardise their memory.
