Last 2019 Croatia trip post! Added Cavtat, Croatia to one of my favorite places (that list includes Norway, Cincinnati; the rolling green hills of Kentucky; Gamla Stan, Sweden; Nova Scotia; the Sierra Nevadas; Bay St. Louis, Mississippi; the Grand Tetons; obviously NH; a street in Brighton, Massachusetts, and one in Pottsville, Pennsylvania where my grandparents grew up).
October 2019: we stayed at an airbnb here on the tail end of our trip so we could be closer to the airport. But now we know that the airport is so small that you can stay in Dubrovnik the entire time and either take a bus or hail a cab. The daughter of our airbnb owner actually ended up giving us a ride to the airport on her way to work at the hospital! Definitely one of my favorite airbnb hosts ever- that photo of liqueurs were made by the host and left for us to try, along with the candied orange peels she made. so good! We got to the airbnb via ferry from Old Town, Dubrovnik, which was a weird experience since there are a shit ton of ferry services there and the employees of each one speak loudly over each other to try to get you to use their service, kind of like an auction atmosphere. i don’t think we got the best deal, but we definitely got the least crowded boat.. and i felt much safer about that! From the ferry it was a short walk along the shoreline to our airbnb. It was a two bedroom, two bathroom apartment on the Adriatic Sea and the owners lived upstairs but we never saw them aside from when they met us with the key and the welcome goodies. My fav part was swimming in the Adriatic Sea right outside the door; I wore water shoes because there were so many sea urchins! You could see them everywhere, thankfully, i just didn’t want to take any chances and accidentally step on one with bare feet.
We walked all over downtown where they had tons of stands that just sold fun alcoholic drinks to-go. Actually, as as soon as we got off the ferry we got some tall boy beers from a little kiosk for our walk to the airbnb! Hayes and I ate pizza at a waterside cafe for lunch and then had dinner at this seafood place that didn’t have much on the menu because it was their last night open of the season. It was surprisingly chilly that night and the owner sat us by one of their propane fires. It was an open-air restaurant but they had most of the plastic walls down. I had wine and a chesseboard and hayes got the catch of the day. We will definitely be back. The host said she’ll give us a discount too!
another set of photos i never posted from croatia in october 2019: after the day with the two large pizza mix ups, we went swimming at our spot, rested on the patio of the airbnb; then went out to a cliff side bar that i honestly can’t even remember the name of.. and i can’t find it on a map :/ well walking there, this place was very hard to find, especially with no gps since our phones only worked on wifi- the entrance was literally through a hole in the city walls (see photo of hayes having to bend down). my sister and her bf were supposed to meet us there, but they ended up at a completely different cliff side bar called buza bar!
another set of photos from croatia in october 2019: old town during the day; lunch photos too, including a seafood platter; sitting in an alley outside a pub to watch the rugby world tournament games; and accidentally ordering two large pizzas for the two of us when we really meant to order like a small/personal size pizza for each of us. it was soooo good though! made for delicious leftovers.
