The terrible fire 🔥 that consumed the Notre Dame cathedral in Paris was a devastating tragedy. . An important element to fully restore this iconic building will take into account its acoustics. Sounds in the grand halls could reverberate throughout the cathedral due to the way sound waves bounced off the limestone and marble walls. . The unique sonic signature of Notre Dame was also created by the tapestries that could absorb some of the sounds. . Unlike a normal room, sounds could reverberate in the cathedral as long as six seconds. . Fortunately, scientists were able to capture the sonic signature of Notre Dame in 2013. By setting speakers 🔊 that emitted certain wavelengths and frequencies and microphones 🎤 at different places, much of how we perceived sounds in the cathedral was recorded. Simulations with different materials and their organization could be achieved. . The top panel shows how the initial sounds linger in the cathedral. Initially there is an echo (blue lines) and then lingering reverberations (black lines) after the initial sound (red line). . Using the science of acoustics will help completely restore Notre Dame to its grand splendor. . Being it also the #ArchdioceseofParis, it hosts more than 13 million people every year, it is by far the #mostvisitedmonument in #Paris.
