Our Lake || Mike & Avenly
Mike, admittedly, had been pleased when Avenly had suggested another camping trip. He’d even admit that he was quite excited about it. He just really, really enjoyed spending time with her, and now that everything was official, he had to admit that he hoped he would get to spend even more time with her. So, the thought of spending a whole weekend with her, without having to worry about school, or Abby, or anything else was really, really quite appealing. He probably shouldn't admit that he'd skipped his afternoon classes to head out to the clearing to start fixing a tent and everything else, but it was double English, he was already failing, and he'd had an argument with his teacher the previous day. Besides, he'd catch up eventually.
He realised that he must have looked quite ridiculous, walking across campus carrying a bag with a tent, a guitar, a bag stuffed full of blankets and pillows, and another bag full of soda cans and snacks. When he finally got to the clearing and dumped all of his stuff, he wondered how he’d even managed to carry it all in the first place. Mike happily spent the first half hour of his time in the clearing breaking branches off of trees and building a small campfire, with the intention of lighting it later – maybe roasting some marshmallows or something, but it was bound to get colder and a campfire seemed like the best source of heat. After that, he set out a few blankets on the grass at the edge of the lake, near the rock they’d sat on during their camping trip. He’d paused for a few moments, remembering the night that he’d first kissed her, smiling softly to himself.
After messing around with the campfire and blankets for a while, he decided that he should probably figure out how to fix the tent. He’d emptied the bag out in front of him, unsure what to do with all of the poles and pegs that started to roll around the grass. But how difficult could it really be to pitch a tent? Quite, apparently. Or maybe that was just Mike’s fault for ignoring the instructions for the first hour he tried to build it. Ave had said she knew how to pitch a tent, hadn’t she? Mike shook his head, wondering if he should have just asked for her help in the first place. After another hour, he’d finally managed to get the tent up, without causing it or himself any serious damage. His last task was sorting out the inside of the tent with blankets and pillows, and thankfully this time, he'd remembered to bring a flashlight for Avenly, just in case she needed it.
Mike hadn't realised just how long it had taken him to build a tent and fix a campfire until he was finished. He turned and glanced around the clearing, taking a final look at his handiwork before smiling slightly and turning away to head back through the woods and back onto campus. ‘I’m starting to get to be an expert on this route,’ Mike thought, laughing quietly as he walked out of the woods and pulled his phone out of his back pocket, sitting down on the grass. He unlocked his phone and spent a few seconds looking up Avenly’s number before sending her a quick text, ‘Okay, okay, I’m done. Meet me outside the woods where our tent was? If you can find it, that is(:’, then lying back on the grass with a small smile on his face.
