The quiet warrior who is Terry Tempest Williams, speaking last night at Women and Children First bookstore. The first I knew of her was reading Finding Beauty in A Broken World, going from Italy studying mosaic tesserae to Utah and the life of prairie dogs to Rwanda helping to create grieving places for the genocide of the country. Astonishing. Last night she was speaking about the book that I carried for six weeks, reading every word: The Hour of the Land. 12 National Parks are each defined and explained and experienced. Highly recommended reading for those of us who love the wide open spaces and the coexistence of all species. She spoke eloquently, and emotionally about these times we are in, and concluded with a powerful story of she and her husband at dawn in Yellowstone, witnessing a female bison who died, and the creatures coming to devour the carcass, and finally the eight bison who came single file to circle the remaining bones three times, then stand bowed heads, then file back single file up the hill. 'We are not the only species who lives and loves and grieves on this planet.' Powerful. Saw her afterwards near us in a restaurant and could only mumble my gratitude. Realized she has become a quiet guide for these times.
