↳ A CLOSER LOOK:
Addie did not have an easy childhood, her father was much more interested in gambling than he was in being a father, not that he had ever been very good at it. There was more than one occasion that Addie remembers of angry men showing up at their home, taking things, breaking things, do whatever they wanted because her father owed them a debt. Her mother was much more interested in keeping herself numb with alcohol than doing anything about it.
Despite everything, Addie was daddy’s little girl, always helping him clean up, cleaning his wounds for him after he was beat up by god knows who, for god knows what. In fact, there were many occasions when she missed school just to help take care of him.
Things changed as she got older, though. Her father liked to bet in the same circles, and liked to owe the same people. There was one man, who Addie had known since she was young, but as she got older, he started to stare at her, letting his eyes wander for too long. When she had barely turned 16 and her father owed a debt, he showed up to the their house offered him a way out with having to pay a dime, all he wanted was to spend a night with Addie. To her horror, her father agreed, caring more about his addiction than anything else.
It was the worst night of Addie’s life, and she cried the entire time. It was her first time having sex, which just made it all that much worse. She knew it was wrong, but she hadn’t been given a choice. Before anyone even woke up the next day, Addie was gone, she threw what little clothes she had in a bag, took her savings that she’d hidden in her room and took off. She didn’t know where to go, but decided New Orleans was a nice place to start. Too bad she couldn’t afford a bus ticket to New Orleans. However, she could afford a ticket to Cotton Plant, more than halfway to New Orleans.
She had only planned to be there for a short time, just long enough to save up for another bus ticket to New Orleans. Of course, she couldn’t get a job anywhere in a small town like that, not when the unemployment rate was already so high. Instead, she found herself in the next town over, using a fake ID to get herself a job a strip club.
She had no where to stay, but through her job made some friends, and bounced around between friend’s couches, and the beds of some random strangers thrown into the mix for almost a year, until she met a friend who let her stay with her and her family.
Addie is incredibly grateful to the family that took her in, making her one of their own, despite everything. After missing a year of school, a diploma wasn’t really in the cards for her, but with their help, she did get her GED. Secretly she hopes to go to college one day, but doesn’t know if she ever will. For now, she’s just happy dancing at the club.
