I’ve read a lot of shifter books, and this series is by far my favorite. Not only do I love the characters, this by far is my favorite lore for shifters.
A wolf and a human share the same body, but they are two souls and they can talk to each other. And wolves that have been rejected by their mate have special abilities. But if there’s a disconnect between the wolf and the human, the wolf goes rabid and cannot become human again.
The Rejected Mate Refuge is a place where rejected wolves have banded together for their own safety, and they eventually become the Outcast Pack.
I started with book four since it was labeled a standalone, thinking it was one of those series where authors string loosely related books together for marketing purposes. Then I realized it was a standalone about different characters from the same pack after I finished it, and I hurried to read the rest of the series.
The first three books focus on Cara and Knox. Cara finds her fated mate, only for him to reject her and sell her into a wolf fighting ring. There she meets Knox and discovers she’s a wolf tamer, she can calm rabid wolves. Cara has to struggle with overcoming the abuse she suffered at her fated mate’s claws while trying to help the rabid wolves.
The fourth book, which is the one I read first and is my favorite, focuses on Shadow and Ryker, the founders of the Rejected Mate Refuge. The mate who rejected Shadow shows up and wants her back, but she wants nothing to do with him. She’s in love with Ryker, but Ryker’s not in love with her.
Or so she thinks.
The fifth book is about Taylor, a wolf rejected for being infertile. She believes no one could want to be with her, but her friend with benefits is determined to prove her wrong.
The sixth book is about Lex, a female wolf that was rabid until book four. She’s struggled with her past and finds herself with only a few months to live, so she sets out to see the world before she dies. One of the other wolves insists on coming with her.
My only complaint about this book is Lex’s whole plan when she sets out is that she’s going to Disneyland, and then I only got a rushed paragraph of them spending time at Disneyland.
The last book is the shortest, it’s more of a novella than a novel. Alaska was rejected by her mate for not being a virgin, but it’s because she was assaulted. Her past comes back to haunt her, and she has to return to her birth pack to face them.
