WAIT WHAT, TONI GRAPHIA?!?!?
Source
Separately they first mourned Faith.
Then found strength in each other.
When they parted - they mourned her memory in private.
When they reunited after so long apart - spoke her name aloud for the first time in twenty years - their love for her restored her memory.
Together they remembered her. And once again, found strength in each other.

A most blessed Mother’s Day to you and the mothers in your lives.
Day 7 - Faith
The 13 Days of Outlander has returned!
Some of you may remember that for each Season 2 episode, I wrote a companion ficlet. So I’ll be “celebrating” the 13 Days of Season 2 by re-posting a link to the ficlet, as well as providing some backstory about what inspired the story and how I wrote it.
We were all so emotionally shattered after “Faith.”
But I wanted to see more of what had happened after Jamie and Claire reconciled, and before they visited their daughter’s tiny grave.
So I had three images - finding the apostle spoons again. Claire showing Jamie what I so wished would have happened - namely, that the nuns would have given her some of Faith’s baby hair, and that she could share that with Jamie. And then Claire shaving Jamie, removing a physical sign of their separation.
“Nothing Is Lost, Only Changed” is a line directly from Drums of Autumn. Claire says that that is the first law of thermodynamics. Jamie says that this is faith. Faith.
Day 8 - Favorite Master Raymond Scene
The 25 Days of Outlander has returned!
I’ve always loved Master Raymond - and his portrayal in the series just brought the character to life!
Master Raymond is the first character we meet in all of the Outlander saga whom we know to have “special” powers. Healing powers. Which, as we know, he uses to heal Claire following Faith’s birth.
I so love how the healing scene was adapted in 02x07 “Faith.” But what I love more about the scene is what he says to Claire right at the very end - something that wasn’t in Dragonfly in Amber:
Have faith.
Faith that Claire and Raymond will see each other again. Faith that Jamie and Claire will be restored to each other - and that they will forgive each other, and help each other heal.
Faith in all things - particularly those that have been lost.
Here, in this scene, Master Raymond not only gives Claire her life - he sets the stage for her to restore her faith, despite the loss of Faith - and faith.
Day 7 - Favorite Mother Hildegarde Scene
The 25 Days of Outlander has returned!
Oh, Mother Hildegarde. She truly became the mother that Claire never had - and by her love and compassion, aided Claire during the very brief time she had with Faith.
Never more so during this absolutely heartbreaking scene in 02x07 “Faith.” Mother Hildegarde brought Louise to Claire - knowing that although she could not get through to her, Louise could. Giving Claire not just the gift of prayer in her hour of need - but the gift of friendship, and the chance for one mother to connect with another.
In giving Claire this gift, Mother Hildegarde shows that she herself is a true mother. Just as Claire lost Faith - and faith - Mother Hildegarde fears that she will lose Claire. And like the best of mothers, she gently nudges her back to herself.
“We are the only two people in the world that share this pain. This...pain of losing faith.”
-- Jamie to Claire, 02x07 “Faith”
-----
I deliberately did not capitalize the last word that Jamie says to Claire above. Because in that moment, they both realize that they have lost not only Faith, their daughter - but also their faith in each other.
Claire’s faith in Jamie to keep his word.
Jamie’s faith in himself to be a good provider, to keep his family (including Fergus, of course) safe.
The loss of faith in Jamie and Claire’s marriage. Their faith in their vow to love and cherish each other, above all else. Their vow to be honest with each other.
Faith Fraser embodies the loss of so much faith.
And yet - in this scene, Jamie and Claire openly share so much pain. And in so doing, restore their faith in each other, since they realize that there is nobody else in this world who can understand that pain, and therefore can support the other in enduring and carrying that pain.
In this way, Faith Fraser gives her parents the faith to find their way back to each other.
And all of the applause to Toni Graphia for showing us exactly that.
I wanted to ask you about episode 2x07 when master raymond took out the placenta that was stuck inside claire. I wanted to know what was your take on why he told claire to call out to jamie? Was there a significance to it?
It has to do with just how deeply Claire’s love for Jamie - and her body’s thirst for his touch - are imprinted on her mind and soul. For as her body was dying, her mind had walled off all feeling, to protect herself from the heart-crushing grief of losing Faith. And in doing so, her soul was dying. Master Raymond appealed to Claire’s love for Jamie as a way to heal her body.
Remember how Claire tells Brianna that Jamie was the blood and breath of her body, and that’s why she couldn’t leave him when he took her to Craigh Na Dun after the witch trial? Master Raymond recognizes that. He knows that Jamie’s soul - and body - have a hold on Claire’s soul and body like nothing else.
Deep down, although she convinced herself that she hated Jamie, or blamed him for Faith’s death - she didn’t mean it. It was easier to blame someone - anyone - as an explanation for what had happened. But of course she still loved him - and her body craved his. So by asking Claire to call out to Jamie, Master Raymond got her to come out of the hard shell - the gray shroud - she’d constructed around herself, and to actually stop blaming other people and to actually *do* something for herself. To heal herself - because if she wouldn’t do it for her own sake, perhaps she would do it for Jamie’s sake.
