I’ve been thinking about your question of whether revenge would heal the wrong done to you.
I advise you now that you must not seek it.
For the sake of your soul, for the sake of your own life, you must find the grace to forgive.
Freedom is hard-won, but it is not the fruit of murder.
Do not fear that he will escape vengeance.
Such a man carries with him the seeds of his own destruction.
“After all that, I still loved her.”
-- Roger MacKenzie, 04x12 “Providence”
--
It’s striking how Roger’s feelings for Brianna are identical to Jamie’s for Claire. Consider that after Claire fell into his life, Jamie:
Was shot (the next day)
Lived as an outlaw
Was forced to outwit his uncles by avoiding pledging loyalty to them
Was forced into marriage
Killed an English soldier who tried to rape his new wife
Had to return to the site of where he had been brutalized (Fort William) to save Claire from the clutches of the man who had brutalized him (Black Jack Randall)
Risked his life to save Claire at the witch trial in Cranesmuir
Was arrested by the Watch
Was imprisoned, beaten, raped, dehumanized by Black Jack Randall - all to save Claire from him
Endured months of emotional torment in Paris
Went against
Challenged Randall to a duel, and was imprisoned
Lost his firstborn child - and lost the chance to ever see her with his own eyes
Marched in the cold, wet Scottish weather with the Jacobite Army
Was forced to send Claire back through the stones - losing the chance of a life with her, and a life with the child he had just found out about
Survived the Battle of Culloden and its bloody aftermath
Lived like an animal in a cave for 7 years
Served prison time
Was paroled in a gilded prison (Helwater)
Was blackmailed into sleeping with his employer’s daughter
Killed his newborn son’s putative father, to protect the baby
Returned to Lallybroch a shell of a man
Lost his printshop in a fire
Almost lost Claire when she found out about Laoghaire
Was shot by Laoghaire
Endured separation at sea from Claire
Etc.
And despite this - despite all of this - Jamie still loves Claire beyond reason and logic.
Despite the pain and death and heartbreak that followed from just about the moment he met her - he will *always* make the same choice. He will *always* choose her.
Roger and Jamie love their wives deeply. I can’t wait to watch them build their relationship, and recognize this kinship.
This song was running through my head at the end of 04x12...
